- ZeitschriftenartikelA simulative approach to determining the economic efficiency of software patents(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 46, No. 1, 2004) Beimborn, Daniel; Hoppen, NormanTraditionally, only technical inventions such as light bulbs or pharmaceuticals were protected by patents. Nowadays software patents are a widely discussed topic in the U.S. and in Europe because of their supposed impact on national innovation rates. Based on an analysis of the determinants of successful software development, we use a bipartite probability model to compare a deregulated market without patents to a market using a patent system. Applying computer-based simulations, we analyze different scenarios to test the impact of different patent duration and width on the innovation behavior of the software market. We show that strong patent protection is globally efficient only in markets with a relatively low profit potential.
AbstractThis paper contributes to a better understanding and to mitigate negative consequences of cultural diversity in multinational IT project teams. Our research explores how culture-specific behaviors impact social capital among team members and how firms can manage the strains. In the existing IS culture literature, culture-specific behaviors are – if at all – traced back to single culture dimensions. In contrast, the approach proposed in this article goes one step further suggesting that it is necessary to combine several culture dimensions to better understand a certain culture-specific behavior and consequently be able to better manage resulting relationship problems in multinational settings. Conducting exploratory case studies in six multinational IT projects, two exemplary cultural behavior patterns (face maintenance in India and post-communism in the Czech Republic) are identified, and management actions to avoid project performance problems are derived. The results contribute to a better understanding and management of the negative impact of culture-specific behaviors in IT project teams and corroborate that research based on culture dimensions, such as those conceptualized by Hofstede or House et al., is valuable for understanding multi-country IS projects. The findings in particular suggest that aggregating these dimensions to cultural behavior patterns improves their explanatory power and consequently the management’s capability to mitigate the negative consequences of cultural diversity.
AbstractImportance of the Alignment of IT and Business Resources in Financial Processes — An Empirical Study How do firms realize business value from deploying IT in business processes? Based on the Resource-based View and insights from recent literature on IT/business alignment, we argue that actual usage and the alignment of IT and business units are important prerequisites for a superior performance of IT-intensive business processes. In this paper, a causal model on the joint impact of IT usage, IT/business alignment and business resources on business process performance is proposed and empirically validated using data from Germany’s 1.000 largest banks. It turns out that the perceived performance of the focal business process, as predicted in the theoretical model, strongly depends on IT/business alignment. The empirical analysis also shows that business resources have a large impact and that even a superior IT cannot compensate business resource deficiencies. The results thereby provide support for important propositions of the literature on alignment from a process perspective and contribute to common knowledge that the business value of IT should not be assessed without evaluating and controlling for business resources as a complementary factor.

- KonferenzbeitragPerception of Social Costs of Digitalization: Profiling Top Managers, Middle Managers, and Front-line Employees(1st International Conference on Software Product Management 2023, 2023) Bogodistov, Yevgen; Schwaiger, Antonia; Beimborn, DanielAlthough information technology has become advanced in profiling users, we often offer this knowledge to marketing and forget that profiling is needed for information technology implementation itself. If digitalization is introduced in a firm, it may encounter internal resistance. Top managers, middle managers, and front-line employees may have different expectations with regard to digitalization initiatives in their firms. Having different visions of what digitalization is about may result in conflicts with regard to digital solutions selection and implementation and, consequently, lead to digitalization failure. In this paper, we look at differences in digitalization cost perception using a Discrete Choice Experiment. Based on our findings, we propose to approach firms by profiling top managers, middle managers, and front-line employees.

- ZeitschriftenartikelThe Role of Experience for Outsourcing Evaluation(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 47, No. 6, 2005) Beimborn, Daniel; Franke, Jochen; Weitzel, TimThe Role of Experience for Outsourcing Evaluation — Impact of Individual Outsourcing Experience on the Perception of Economies of Scale, Skill, and ScopeDespite a maturing IS literature mostly explaining outsourcing, many important phenomena challenging managers in charge of outsourcing decisions remain ambiguous. In this paper, antecedents of the outsourcing decision are critically discussed focusing on the question: What is the impact of outsourcing experience on managers’ perception of economies of scale, scope, and skill? Based on an empirical survey with Germany’s Fortune 1,000 firms, it is shown that managers without prior outsourcing experience substantially overestimate the firm’s in-house competencies compared to external experts. The picture changes for managers with experience, establishing an important cultural barrier to outsourcing.
