- KonferenzbeitragAdditional Information in Business Processes: A Pattern-Based Integration of Natural Language Artefacts(Modellierung 2014, 2014) Bittmann, Sebastian; Metzger, Dirk; Fellmann, Michael; Thomas, OliverBusiness process modelling initiatives frequently make use of semi-formal modelling languages for depicting the business processes and their control flows. While these representations are beneficial for the analysis, simulation and automatic execution of processes, they are not necessarily the best option to communicate process knowledge required by employees to execute the process. Hence, textual process representations and their transformation to semi-formal models gain importance. In this paper, a pattern-based modelling approach positioned in between the two extremes of informal text and semi-formal process models is derived. The patterns offer a basis for a seamless integration of natural language and business process models. In particular the business process modelling patterns, which have to rely on human interactions are focussed. For those patterns an integrated representation of information that support the manual execution is developed. The approach fosters the contribution by employees of the operative business, since it does not rely on classical modelling paradigms, but uses natural language for modelling business processes.
- KonferenzbeitragCooperative-intrinsic planning and model-driven design of business information systems(Informatik 2014, 2014) Bittmann, SebastianThe planning and design of information systems is an increasingly complex and challenging task. With respect to recent developments regarding an individual as a constituting and highly creative impact on the respective organizational structures and application systems, methods are required for a sophisticated inclusion of these actors in the design of information systems. Therewith, the roles of system analysts shift from a prescribing and governmental role to a supportive actor that targets a resource-orientated vision of business information systems. Because of that methods and techniques are required that support the elicitation of potential and the effort for a collaborative identification of a development direction. “Cooperative-intrinsic” refers to the inclusion of any individual of an information system in the act of planning, in order to support agility and flexibility of an enterprise. Model-driven design aims at the support by enterprise models for the analyses and clarification of information systems, to prevent alignment faults, errors and redundancy. Furthermore, technologies need to be adapted purposefully to support the agility and flexibility of modern industries by cooperative-intrinsic planning and model-driven design of business information systems.
- ZeitschriftenartikelDesigning Customer-Specific Product-Service Systems in B2B Markets - A Consecutive Framework for Development and Configuration Management(Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures - An International Journal: Vol. 10, Nr. 1, 2015) Fuchs, Alexander; Bittmann, Sebastian; Özcan, DenizSuppliers of Product-Service Systems (PSS) pursue the objective of creating long-term customer relationships. In order to achieve that, PSS in Business to Business (B2B) markets need to be designed as a tool for PSS suppliers and clients, supporting them in achieving their certain business goals. One approach can be applied by identifying common goals and aligning all PSS-related management activities. This paper shows how this approach can be designed in a systematic way. Therefore, a consecutive framework for the development and configuration management of customer-specific PSS in B2B markets is derived. Applying it to a case study of food industry, the framework’s relevance and its transferability into practice is demonstrated.
- KonferenzbeitragDo We Need a Standard for EPC Modelling? The State of Syntactic, Semantic and Pragmatic Quality(Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures (EMISA 2013), 2013) Fellmann, Michael; Bittmann, Sebastian; Karhof, Arne; Stolze, Carl; Thomas, OliverThe quality determination of business process models is a complex and demanding task. In literature, a plethora of different quality criteria can be identified and are respectively used by practitioners. The selection of quality criteria depends on the one hand on the respective preferences of the individual modeller. On the other hand, it is prescribed by the modelling language in use, as it has embodied specific criteria e.g. based on its syntax. For the widespread EPC, no comprehensive overview of existing aspects for the evaluation of an EPC model's syntactic, semantic and pragmatic quality exists. With this investigation, we present such an overview and put the identified aspects into a holistic perspective based on the identified and relevant literature.
- KonferenzbeitragHow does an enterprise become an anti-social system? A motivation for the need of social and cultural capital for retaining the corporate success(INFORMATIK 2013 – Informatik angepasst an Mensch, Organisation und Umwelt, 2013) Bittmann, Sebastian; Thomas, OliverWith an increasing on agility, respectively the adaptation of IT artefacts with respect to changing requirements, a resource with an increasing importance for the differentiation of one enterprise towards its competitors is the human capital. Thereby, in this paper it will be argued that in order to use such human capital, a demanding influence is the social capital of the enterprise. Social capital is defined by the art of interacting or relation between individuals as part of the same social system, namely the enterprise. So, generally, social capital defines the type of culture an enter- prise is characterised with. With an increasing importance of autonomous IT-artefacts, in the latter referred as mechanical actors, the social capital decreases, because of the missing social orientation of interactions between human and mechanical actors. While the common notion of this issue is the search for more efficient and less costly processes, the authors argue that every domain, which has become irrelevant losses its potential of innovation with the lack of human interaction and in use of creativity.
- KonferenzbeitragA theory of practice modelling – Elicitation of model pragmatics in dependence to human actions(Modellierung 2014, 2014) Bittmann, Sebastian; Thomas, OliverConceptual modelling is a constituting and popular theme in information systems research. With the proposal of different languages, concepts and methods, modelling has evolved to a sophisticated tool of systems design. With a focus on providing concepts with more enriched semantics, even more specific approaches have been developed, such as business process modelling and enterprise modelling. Providing a model often seems to be a means to an end, whether it is academic research or industrial cases. However, if the reasons to construct a model goes beyond analytical purposes, then the respective model must serve a sense of pragmatism, respectively needs to be utile with respect to the achievement of the different tasks an information system has. Therefore, this paper aims at a more restrained definition of the general modelling term, while it is consentient to the constructivism of modelling. Thereby, a model will be not seen as a solution, but a sophisticated manner to provide and evolve information. Having that in mind, such a conception of a model helps to purposefully create sophisticated and pragmatic models.
- KonferenzbeitragWhere to find the creativity? A case study from the public sector using an integrative approach of an enterprise wiki and an enterprise modelling environment(INFORMATIK 2013 – Informatik angepasst an Mensch, Organisation und Umwelt, 2013) Bittmann, Sebastian; Fellmann, Michael; Thomas, OliverReacting on an unstable environment in an agile manner is a creative driven act. The creative needs may be motivated by the amount of possible solutions, from which one solution might be selected, that fits the respective enterprise perfectly. However, enterprise model might be defined as an instrument that offers the development of solutions under the consideration of various aspects of the enterprise by a rather strategic or tactical located organisational unit. So it needs to be undertaken from a holistic perspective and hence, needs to omit various peculiarities faced by the operative business. Analogously, enterprise wikis are capable of collecting such peculiarities from the operative business, but as these inscriptions are often taken without any form, they might lose their focus with respect to the strategic direction of the enterprise. Therefore we introduce a bilateral approach that comes with the benefits of a holistic description by means of enterprise model and additional is able to capture valuable information from the operative business by means of the enterprise wiki. The approach will be evaluated with in an exploratory case study, which was undertaken with one of the biggest agencies of the public sector. Specifically such agency needs to repeatedly adapt towards new requirements, e.g. legal regulations. It will be shown how such requirement should be faced by a rather holistic enterprise model description and a self-adaptation through the collection and evaluation of experiences in an enterprise wiki.
