Triggered by the ever-increasing shortage of skilled workers, it is necessary to automate certain tasks and have them supported by technologies (e.g. software robots). Office processes in particular can benefit significantly from the technological possibilities in the automation environment to meet the demographic challenges of the coming years. Specifically, Robotic Process Automation offers significant added value by relieving the burden on skilled office workers. To be able to introduce software robots in the context of Robotic Process Automation, a clear process documentation is necessary for preparation. Currently, processes are often manually documented by domain experts, which makes the configuration of a software robot complex and expensive. In this article, the Desktop Activity Mining method is presented as a solution for automated process acquisition, which can be used as the first steps towards process automation via software robots. Desktop Activity Mining is discussed on a conceptional level, as well as on a technical level in form of its architecture. Furthermore, different application possibilities of the Desktop Activity Mining method are developed to achieve a practical transfer for the reader. Finally, the research project KI.RPA is presented, which intends to bridge the gap between the automated capture of processes and the automated creation of software robots.
Nowadays, the importance of lean and effective processes in companies is increasing considering the background of business rivalry and cost pressure. To counteract this challenge, companies focus on identifying new innovative potentials. Due to the fact that monotonous and rule-based processes can be automated through software robots, the interest in robotic process automation (RPA) has been growing steadily over the last few years. But before a company decides whether or not to use RPA, it is firstly necessary for decision-makers to get an understanding of RPA and to be able to assess the potential uses and risks. This paper takes this need into account by determining and evaluating them on the basis of a literature review. The outlook evaluates future significance of RPA.
This paper describes the impact of technological innovations in speech recognition, artificial intelligence in speech processing, and Robotic Process Automation for call center. These technological drivers represent disruptive innovations that have an enormous impact on business structures. Based on an actual call center architecture, a target image for a future architecture of a call center 4.0 will be developed. In this context, the expected effects on the call center business model are discussed. Based on the analysis of the effects of the increased integration of technology, overall effects on society are discussed and the focus is directed to current discussions. It becomes obvious that workplace profiles will change significantly because of the integration of new technologies. On the one hand, in many areas this will lead to an accumulation of activities. On the other hand, for call center the technological development could lead to elimination of jobs. At the social level, economical and ethical questions of cohabitation become relevant.
- KonferenzbeitragDesktop Activity Mining - A new level of detail in mining business processes(Workshops der INFORMATIK 2018 - Architekturen, Prozesse, Sicherheit und Nachhaltigkeit, 2018) Linn, Christian; Zimmermann, Phileas; Werth, DirkNew analysis and automation technologies are significantly changing the way how business process management is performed. Especially Robotic ProcessAutomation (RPA) is rapidly gaining importance as a method to automate office processes. An efficient automation of office processes however requires detailed information about all user activities related to the process. While process mining techniques can in principle be used to discover processes in a data-driven way, the existing approaches are not able to gather information in a level of detail required for automation purposes. That is why in particular the configuration of RPA systems is a labor and knowledge-intensive task that is based on a human expert, modeling all process variations in detail. In this paper, we present Desktop Activity Mining as a new approach to mine detailed process activity data. The concept is to record the detailed desktop activities of all users performing an office process and consolidate the process variations with process mining techniques to discover an integrated process model. As a proof of concept, we realized a prototypical implementation. Our findings suggest that Desktop Activity Mining holds the potential to optimize not only process automation but also to derive a new level of detail in mining and analyzing business processes.
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is one of the central topics of digital transformation. The possibilities of using software robots to automate business processes without costly changes to the back-end systems are currently being tested and implemented by numerous companies. This goes hand in hand with the question of where the responsibility for the bots, which are often created in a decentralized manner, should be located and how to prevent uncontrolled growth and the resulting “shadow IT”. RPA governance, which defines structures, processes and responsibilities, is essential for a targeted expansion of this technology in the company. ECE Projektmanagement GmbH & Co.KG has already gained initial experience with the use of RPA technologies in various business areas with a focus on the financial sector. The article shows how RPA governance is developed on this basis for the following company-wide rollout. Referring to specifics of the affected business areas, a hybrid approach is presented that allows both decentralized responsibility and centralization in the IT area. The result is a flexibly adaptable role and process model that ensures the sustainable expansion of RPA technology in the company and is transferable to other companies and industries.
Crises require flexible action and quick adjustments from both people and public institutions. The public sector and especially the German health authorities are massively challenged by the Covid-19 pandemic, starting in March 2020. The management of the partially exponentially growing process volumes due to short-term infection (superspreading) events must be carried out professionally in the shortest time possible and is subject to permanent reaction and adaptation to changing conditions. Existing structures and inefficient processes make this necessary scaling of processing increasingly difficult. In this article, approaches for an accelerated and flexible development of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solutions for the automation of existing administrative processes within an affected health authority in Germany are investigated by means of action research. As a result, approaches for a faster and less complex development of RPA solutions in a very fast scaling and at the same time heterogeneous IT system landscape were elaborated and evaluated.
- KonferenzbeitragImpact of Robotic Process Automation on Enterprise Architectures(INFORMATIK 2019: 50 Jahre Gesellschaft für Informatik – Informatik für Gesellschaft (Workshop-Beiträge), 2019) Auth, Gunnar; Czarnecki, Christian; Bensberg, FrankThe initial idea of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the automation of business processes through the presentation layer of existing application systems. For this simple emulation of user input and output by software robots, no changes of the systems and architecture is required. However, considering strategic aspects of aligning business and technology on an enterprise level as well as the growing capabilities of RPA driven by artificial intelligence, interrelations between RPA and Enterprise Architecture (EA) become visible and pose new questions. In this paper we discuss the relationship between RPA and EA in terms of perspectives and implications. As workin- progress we focus on identifying new questions and research opportunities related to RPA and EA.
- TextdokumentRealizing Robotic Process Automation Potentials: An Architectural Perspective on a Real-life Implementation Case(INFORMATIK 2021, 2021) Ritschel, Konstantin; Stenzel, Adina; Czarnecki, Christian; Hong, Chin-GiThe initial idea of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the automation of business processes through a simple emulation of user input and output by software robots. Hence, it can be assumed that no changes of the used software systems and existing Enterprise Architecture (EA) is required. In this short, practical paper we discuss this assumption based on a real-life implementation project. We show that a successful RPA implementation might require architectural work during analysis, implementation, and migration. As practical paper we focus on exemplary lessons-learned and new questions related to RPA and EA.
- KonferenzbeitragRobotic Process Automation in Public Administrations(Digitalisierung von Staat und Verwaltung, 2019) Houy, Constantin; Hamberg, Maarten; Fettke, PeterAgainst the background of current activities towards administrative modernization based on the digitalization of processes, the usage and integration of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) software into public administration work processes can significantly improve their efficiency, reduce process costs and provide better services for citizens. This paper presents and investigates the concept of RPA and discusses the particular potential and challenges of RPA in the public administration context. Furthermore, it demonstrates an application example of a new cognitive RPA approach for automated data extraction and processing that is used in a trade tax assessment scenario using deep convolutional neural networks (CNN). Based on the findings it can be concluded that RPA has considerable potential for the improvement of the efficiency of administrative work processes and for administrative modernization in general.
