    Data-Mining-Anwendungsarchitektur
(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 46, No. 1, 2004) Petersohn, Helge
The ability to combine domain specific knowledge and special knowledge about using mathematical-statistical methods for analyzing big data bases at present time is not wide-spread in science and business. For the near future, an increase in data mining applications can be expected. So, one needs instruments to support non-specialists in using specific knowledege about data mining. In this paper a data mining architecture is introduced. Its main advantage is to offer a systematical scheme for data mining methods. These methods are structured with reference to applications. The data mining application architecture is a decision and structuring support for data mining problems to users, scientists and students.

    Einsatzpotenziale von XML in Business-Intelligence-Systemen
(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 46, No. 1, 2004) Schwalm, Stephan; Bange, Carsten
This article describes the actual applications of XML in the context of Business- Intelligence-Systems (BI). The potentials and synergies of XML and BI will be emphasized. ▪XML applications can be found within all levels of BI-systems.▪The application of core-standards will be introduced as well as the possibilities of BI specific-standards.▪The discussion of the impact of XML for BI-systems follows along the dimensions: externalisation, integration, standardisation and rationalization.

Data-Warehouse als Applikationsbasis? — Zur Kosten- und Leistungsrechnung (nicht nur) im Gesundheits- und Sozialwesen
(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 46, No. 1, 2004) Hofschröer, Peter; Romberg, Tim
Using the hospital as an example for service sectors with a heterogeneous application landscape, we put forward the hypothesis that it is not feasible to implement cost accounting applications inside operative systems such as ERP, as it is assumed by the conventional data warehousing approach. Rather, the data warehouse, with its extraction, validation and transformation tools, delivers the right platform, creating an application layer which acts on the data before it is being loaded into multidimensional cubes. The cost accounting application enriches the data in the data warehouse by imputing costs and profits to the various calculatory objects such as ledgers, cost centres and cost objects (products). Our hypothesis is further validated by the fact that typical data warehousing tools, e.g. tree structures, are ideal for defining the often complicated calculation metadata.

A simulative approach to determining the economic efficiency of software patents
(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 46, No. 1, 2004) Beimborn, Daniel; Hoppen, Norman
Traditionally, only technical inventions such as light bulbs or pharmaceuticals were protected by patents. Nowadays software patents are a widely discussed topic in the U.S. and in Europe because of their supposed impact on national innovation rates. Based on an analysis of the determinants of successful software development, we use a bipartite probability model to compare a deregulated market without patents to a market using a patent system. Applying computer-based simulations, we analyze different scenarios to test the impact of different patent duration and width on the innovation behavior of the software market. We show that strong patent protection is globally efficient only in markets with a relatively low profit potential.

Referenzmodellierung im Data-Warehousing — State-of-the-Art und konfigurative Ansätze für die Fachkonzeption
(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 46, No. 1, 2004) Becker, Jörg; Knackstedt, Ralf
Reference models increase the efficiency of data warehouse projects by providing construction patterns. This paper presents an overview of existing applications of reference models for data warehousing which shows that there is only insufficient support of model alternatives during requirements definition. Especially configurable reference models provide an adequate solution for creating project-specific models. Therefore, we suggest an extension of data warehouse modeling techniques by configuration rules. The configuration of reference models is embedded in the data warehouse development process. Furthermore, supplementary operational instructions for reference model designers are outlined.
