Frontex Perspectives on Biometrics for Border Checks
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Berglund, Erik; Karbauskaite, Rasa
The European Union is developing new concepts for border management. Biometrics is seen is a key technology to facilitate more secure and convenient border management. Biometric information in the form of the facial image is already stored in the electronic passports, and from 2009 fingerprints will also be stored. Also from 2009, biometrics will be introduced in the Visa Information System (VIS). The VIS will store facial images and fingerprints of all visa applicants and a check against the stored data will be performed at the border crossing. The use of biometrics makes the concept of automated border crossing feasible. Frontex has studied such systems and found them to perform well. There are, however, several design issues that need to be addressed to make the systems more user friendly.

Template Protection for PCA-LDA-based 3D Face Recognition Systems
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Hartung, Daniel
Authentication based on biometrics became significantly important over the last years. Privacy and security concerns arise by the extensive deployment of bio- metrics. The used biometric features itself have to be secured. We propose a security mechanism that solves privacy related problems in 3D facial verification systems. Our solution combines PCA/LDA feature extraction with the Helper Data Scheme for tem- plate protection. The evaluation shows recognition rates at the same level for secured and unsecured templates, which leads to a win-win scenario for users and providers of the adapted systems.

TLS-Federation – a Secure and Relying-Party-Friendly Approach for Federated Identity Management
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Bruegger, Bud P.; Hühnlein, Detlef; Schwenk, Jörg
Federated Single-Sign-On using web browsers as User Agents becomes increasingly important. However, current proposals require substantial changes in the implementation of the Relying-Party, and concentrate on functionality rather than security against real-world attacks like Cross Site Scripting (XSS) and Pharming. We therefore propose a different approach based on Transport Layer Security (TLS), which is implemented in any web browser and web server, and which is immune against all currently known attacks.

eVoting with the European Citizen Card
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Meister, Gisela; Hühnlein, Detlef; Eichholz, Jan; Araújo, Roberto
As many European countries are about to introduce national ID cards, which are compliant to the European Citizen Card specification [CEN15480] it is natural to study how those cards may be used to implement secure electronic vot- ing schemes. For this purpose we introduce a modified variant of the electronic voting scheme introduced in [JCJ05] which may be used with European Citizen Cards.

Performance Evaluation of Multibiometric Face Recognition Systems
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Castro Neves, Margarida; Chindaro, Samuel; Ng, Ming; Zhou, Ziheng; Deravi, Farzin
The 3D Face project investigates the use of 3D face recognition technologies, and aims to improve their performance so that it would be possible to use such technologies in unsupervised access control scenarios in airports. During this project novel sensors, 2D, 3D, skin texture matchers and fusion algorithms have been developed. A technology performance test has been performed on all algorithms, in order to evaluate the technology improvements. This paper describes the independent test and evaluation activities for this project and gives an overview of the results obtained.

    Cross-Context Delegation through Identity Federation
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Peeters, Roel; Simoens, Koen; Cock, Danny de; Preneel, Bart
We present in this paper a basic scheme for delegation in a federated setting and two more advanced schemes, transferable and corporated delegation. By transfer- able delegation delegatees are able to delegate the received privileged actions further to someone else. Corporate delegation is delegation within a business context. Our schemes are generic and user-centric. We elaborate on the different procedures to is- sue, accept and revoke mandates in these schemes. Different variations are discussed and their impact on the corresponding procedures is evaluated. For the basic scheme of delegation mandates are used, for more advanced schemes, as the complexity in- creases, use of delegation assertions is proposed.

A Novel Privacy Enhancing Algorithm for Biometric System
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Zhou, Xuebing; Busch, Christoph
Biometrics provide the possibility of unique and convenient authentication. As its application areas grow rapidly, the problems, such as identity fraud and cross matching, threaten the security of biometric systems. Moreover, privacy concerns are associated with biometrics. In this paper we focus on privacy enhancing techniques for biometric systems, which can protect biometric information and enable using biomet- rics without exposure of privacy. A novel privacy enhancing algorithm is proposed. The algorithm is integrated in a 3D face recognition algorithm and tested using the FRGC database. By using the proposed algorithm, high security can be achieved as well as good verification performance.

3D measurement of human faces for biometric application by digital fringe projection with digital light projection (DLP)
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Benderoth, Christian; Yan, Jun; Hooshiar, Kavon; Bell, Rebecca L.; Frankowski, Gottfried
Facial recognition of people can be used for the identification of individuals, or can serve as verification e.g. for access controls. The process requires that the facial data is captured and then compared with stored reference data. In order to obtain better identification and verification performance and to avoid a number of security weaknesses, 3-dimensional facial recognition systems can be used, which outperform in both cases the 2-dimensional systems that are currently used. In this context, an optical 3D face scanning system with structured light projection based on DMD will be introduced, and the performance of the system will be analysed.

A Reference Architecture for Biometric Template Protection based on Pseudo Identities
(BIOSIG 2008: Biometrics and Electronic Signatures, 2008) Breebaart, Jeroen; Busch, Christoph; Grave, Justine; Kindt, Els
Biometric authentication is often considered to enhance identity verifica- tion. The use of biometrics also introduces new challenges to protect the privacy of the subjects while at the same time increasing the security of a verification system. In this paper, a set of requirements is proposed for biometric processing techniques to safeguard privacy and security. From these requirements, a reference architecture is derived that outlines processes and interfaces of biometric template protection meth- ods in a high-level, technology-neutral way.
