Zusammenfassung

The Environmental Internet System EIS is a tool especially made for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to monitor and thus improve their environmental performance. SMEs usually lack financial, technical and human resources to accomplish their environmental management systems (EMS). The core idea of the EIS application is to minimize the negative impact of these lacks. The EIS is accessible by using the Internet, inexpensive and easy to use (one does not need to use the standards). Furthermore, it requires minimal of paperwork, does not consume a lot of time and guides systematically to collect and manage information. The application harmonizes the information collected on environmental issues, guides firms inside a business field to use the same meters and indicators to evaluate their environmental performance and offers a basic form of environmental reporting, for example the Environmental Statement required by the EMAS regulations. Using the harmonized information, it will also be relatively easy to compose national reports if needed.
