Zusammenfassung

Bubiyan Island, approximately 900 km2 in area, is strategically located in Kuwait in the northwestern corner of the Arabian Gulf. It is about 2 km away from the Kuwaiti mainland, separated by the Subbiyah Khor. The island is seasonally flooded by rainwater and sea tides. It is almost totally flat with a few sand mounds mainly in the southern coastal areas. A unique network of tidal channels in the northern part of the island encompasses regionally important salt marsh wetlands. The Island has been uninhabited for many years and the Government of Kuwait has had no plans for its development until 2004 when it initiated a project for development of an environmentally driven master plan. International consultants in collaboration with local institutions have been conducting the project in four phases. The project requires assessment of environmental factors and development of a sustainable land use plan alternatives. An environmental inventory program has been carried out pertaining the following: wildlife, vegetation, fisheries and oceanography, topography, soil, geomorphology, and meteorology. Satellite images were acquired, existing documentation was reviewed, and a database management system in a GIS centre was developed. A comprehensive environmental field survey program of the designated terrestrial, atmospheric and marine ecosystems, accounting for both natural and man-made influences in the island was conducted in the first and second phases of the project. Using a GIS a base map, several thematic and constraint maps were prepared utilizing results generated from the field data and satellite images. The GIS was used for interpreting data and preparing the land use management conceptual designs. Several areas were designated as preserves due to their environmental importance. The application of GIS made it possible to prepare sustainable master plan alternatives that can be evaluated and considered by decision makers.
