    Reasoning from Context
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Zimmermann, Andreas; Lorenz, Andreas; Specht, Marcus
The paper describes a new approach of using the Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) methodology in context-aware systems. We elaborate how this technique can be applied to generate recommendations based on the contexts of users respectively objects especially in a mobile scenario. By combining CBR methodology and context awareness a new and powerful way of modelling and reasoning from contexts emerges. Using CBR cases to enclose the context will then enhance the possibilities to compare contexts, determine certain values of context-similarities, and reflect this information in the process of generating recommendations.

An Ontology-Based Recommendation System for Elderly and Disabled Persons
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Zinnikus, Ingo; Bogdanovich, Anton; Schäfer, Ralph
In this paper, we describe the use of a hierarchical ontology representation as a basis for modelling user preferences in the SAID project for elderly and disabled persons. The nodes of the ontology tree are associated with either pre-selected or dynamically found web sites relevant for each topic of the user s interest (in this way web-surfing can be substituted by browsing through the ontology). In order to further reduce the complexity of the tree, we combine this approach with applying a probability based recommendation system which monitors the user s actions and adapts itself according to the observed behaviour. We also show that the resulting ontology tree is compatible with Bayesian networks and discuss limitations and possible extensions.

Automated System for Personal Learning and Control of Students Knowledge
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Joukova, Irina; Siplivaya, Marina
This paper describes original technology for problems solving and basic principles of design of automated learning and knowledge control system. This system is created as open adaptive hyper media system with personalized access to educational repositories, navigation, learning strategy and control. Such system is a necessary fool for users, because it provides special educational tools for distance learning. It includes: definitions of learning aims; definitions of beginning user’s knowledge; choice of learning strategy; dynamic course materials and personal tests generation; projects development; consultations with teacher; common projects discussion; projects evaluation by teacher. System will make it possible to implement open mobile personalized learning with access to information resources.

Improving Structural Salience by Content Adaptation with Summaries
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Lippitsch, Stefan; Weibelzahl, Stephan; Weber, Gerhard
Users have a better chance to comprehend a text the better its coherence and structural salience is. Presentation adaptation will be used to attain more support for link structure comprehension. We plan to examine the effectivity and efficiency of the user’s domain knowledge acquisiton. Therefore, assessment of both, internal (percent correct answers at tests) and external data (external tests, user satisfaction and goal attainment) is considered.

Proposal for a User Modeling Markup Language
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Heckmann, Dominik
A unified markup language for User Modeling should be a key issue in the research community. Standardization is of great importance but single applications also call for very specific solutions. With UserML, we try to contribute some aspects and try to feed into future standardization efforts. One purpose of the UserML project is to develop a platform for the communication about partial user models in an ubiquitous computing environment, where all different kinds of systems work together work together to satisfy the user's needs. Jon Orwant claims in his Doppelgänger project that we need a protocol for encoding information about users, that any given user modeling system should be able to benefit from others and that user models should follow you around.

    Smart Personalisation for Wireless Applications
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Hellmund, Matthias; Hess, Jan Michael
We present the research approach and current status of the ongoing (September 2002 until February 2003) diploma thesis titled “Smart Personalisation for Wireless Applications”. With an interdisciplinary view on the Mobile Economy Triangle of networks, devices and services the thesis analyses and develops use cases, success factors and selection criteria for learning techniques that drive adaptive personalised applications. The ultimate goal is to create more happy users with better personalised wireless applications. Reaching this aim is supported by applying the concept of mobile KAIZEN, the continuous development of a multi-channel learning profile in dialogue with the mobile user.

Aufgaben- und rollenangepaßte Konzeption idealer Informationsrecherchestrategien

Metrics for the Adaptation of Site Structure
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Herder, Eelco
This paper presents an overview of metrics for web site structure and user navigation paths. Particular attention will be paid to the question what these metrics really say about a site and its usage, and how they can be applied for adapting navigation support to the mobile context.

    Taming the urge to click
    (10. GI-Workshop "Adaptivität und Benutzermodellierung in interaktiven Softwaresystemen", 2002) Butz, Andreas
We describe the development of a user interface for a mobile museum guide based on handheld devices. The system provides audio, video, graphics and text content to visitors of a world cultural heritage site, the Weltkulturerbe Völklinger Hütte [2]. The focus of this paper is on the design process and how the user interface was adapted step by step in order to meet the needs of visitors and account for their observed behaviour. We found that principles generally thought of as good, such as overview and free access to information at different levels, turned out to be of less use than expected for a general audience, and even contraproductive to the task of conveying focused information.
