The purpose of corporate environmental management information systems (EMIS) is to allow organizations dealing with challenges in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development. In particular, they should support rational decision-making. In this regard they are special decision support systems. Instruments like life cycle assessment (LCA) are provided to estimate the impacts of corporate decisions and activities on the global environment. Nowadays, life cycle assessment seems to be the one and only approach to implement material and energy flow oriented environmental management information systems. Because of its history, the decision contexts of LCA are mainly communication and justification. Other decision contexts are optimization of production processes, especially the reduction of waste (material loss) and the effects of marginal changes of the products and services. Conventional LCA does not really cover these questions. In the following contribution enhancements of LCA and material flow analysis (MFA) are presented, which help to overcome these gaps.de
