This paper is part of an ongoing research effort to better understand the act of modelling. We describe a formal framework by which the process of modelling can be regarded as involving the selection of more and more refined interpretations in terms of the underlying meta-model of the modelling language used. The resulting framework will be used to create a laboratory setup in which we can consequently more closely study (and support) modelling processes.en
