The main objective of this research work for Sirsiya block (Uttar Pradesh, India) was to allocate site suitability for forest development and the reforestation in open/ degraded forest area and thus an approach for management of degraded forest for sustainable development using Geographic Information System (GIS) which is a powerful tool for handling spatial and non-spatial data as it provides output in desired manner and combinations. Data base of Sirsiya block has been created in MGE GIS system. Layers input through digitizers were made for land use/ land cover map (Forest type), soil texture & fertility maps, hydrogeomorphology map etc. Using different combinations, overlay (cross tabulation) between Open forest area map Vs. Ground water potential map, Soil fertility map Vs. Ground water potential map, soil texture map Vs. Ground water potential map, Open forest map Vs. Soil texture map etc. and area analysis has been carried out. Land evaluation for suitability was determined as per guidelines of FAO report. Sirsiya Block covers an area of about 46.26 sq. km. as open forest area (degraded forest). These areas require urgent attention for development, management and hence plantation. Species recommended for Open forest area are: Tectona grandis; Shorea robusta; Terminalia tomentosa; Bombax cieba; Bahunia parviflora; Adina cordifolia; Cassia fistula. Species recommended for waste land are: Eucalyptus; Arjun; Semal; Sheesham; Acacia spp.de
