    A system-oriented approach to efficiency and quality of service for Internet service providers

    Diese Dissertation untersucht, wie man die Effizienz und Dienstgüte eines IP Netzwerkes aus der Sicht eines Internet Netzwerkbetreibers optimieren kann und sollte. Da die Gesamteffizienz und -dienstgüte von verschiedenen Aspekten des Betriebs eines Netzwerkes abhängt, wird ein systemorientierter Ansatz in der Dissertation entwickelt und verwendet, d.h. es werden verschiedene Aspekte des Betriebs eines Netzwerks und ihre gegenseitigen Beeinflussungen untersucht. Die untersuchten Aspekte untergliedern sich in drei Bereiche: die Netzwerkarchitektur, die Interkonnektion (Anbindung an andere Netzwerke) und den Bereich der Verkehrsund Netzwerkanpassungsmaßnahmen (traffic and network engineering).

    An approach for the management of service-oriented architecture (SoA) based application systems

    Flexible business processes are a key success factor for enterprises to succeed in globalised markets. The Service-oriented Architecture (SoA) concept is very well suited to support flexible business processes and application systems because capabilities (in form of services) can be composed in the most efficient way to achieve a high level of agility. However, the management of SoA-founded application systems is often neglected. Thus, we present an approach that enhances the traditional SoA concept by additional management functionality, e.g. monitoring mechanisms and SLA management. As a validation of our concept we introduce WSQoSX, a prototypical implementation based on Web Services.

    The eDonkey file-sharing network

    The eDonkey 2000 file-sharing network is one of the most successful peerto-peer file-sharing applications, especially in Germany. The network itself is a hybrid peer-to-peer network with client applications running on the end-system that are connected to a distributed network of dedicated servers. In this paper we describe the eDonkey protocol and measurement results on network/transport layer and application layer that were made with the client software and with an open-source eDonkey server we extended for these measurements.

    Eine Dienstgüte unterstützende Webservice-Architektur für flexible Geschäftsprozesse

    Web services as a technology to enable distributed business processes gain in importance. However, the support of Quality of Service (QoS) is crucial in this context. Thus, we present an integrated web service architecture with comprehensive QoS support. The architecture we introduce in this paper supports the assessment of web services to assure that only web services will be used in critical business processes that satisfy the requirements defined by the user. The selection and execution of a certain web service depends on its QoS-properties that must be guaranteed in Service Level Agreements (SLAs). The compliance with SLAs is monitored by the system as well. Furthermore we introduce a prototypical implementation of our web service architecture.

    A peer-to-peer webcam network

    Today, most peer-to-peer networks are specialised for sharing files, mostly video and audio files. In this paper we describe a peer-to-peer network we are currently implementing. It connects webcams and allows users to search for online pictures and video-/audiostreams by keyword and by location. Peer-to-peer technology is used for the self-organising network so that no central service provider is needed. Research challenges include efficiency and scalabilty aspects and the support for location based search.
