- KonferenzbeitragSind „ineffektive“ Wetterderivate effiziente Risikomanagementinstrumente?(Unternehmens-IT: Führungsinstrument oder Verwaltungsbürde? Referate der 28. GIL Jahrestagung, 2008) Mußhoff, Oliver; Hirschauer, NorbertWe describe a risk programming model that can be used to determine farmers’ willingness-to-pay for weather derivatives. Applying it to a Brandenburg farm reveals that even a highly standardized contract based on accumulated rainfall generates a relevant willingness-to-pay. We find that an underwriter could even add a loading (on the actuarially fair price) which exceeds the level of traditional insurances. Since transaction costs are low compared to insurances, this indicates a relevant trading potential.
- KonferenzbeitragDas Verhalten landwirtschaftlicher Unternehmer bei der Fremdkapitalaufnahme(Anforderungen an die Agrarinformatik durch Globalisierung und Klimaveränderung, 2009) Mußhoff, Oliver; Waßmuß, Harm; Hirschauer, NorbertFarmers do not often change from their house bank to another bank, even if the competing banks offer better conditions. This "reluctance to switch" can be explained, on the one hand, by the transaction costs resulting from such a change of business relation. On the other hand, it may be the result of bounded rationality. The results of a survey of North German farmers show that they are indeed bounded rational borrowers. They greatly underestimate the monetary disadvantages which are caused by the higher interest rates for loans from their house bank. In other words: They do not switch bank even if their individually perceived transaction costs are already "covered" by the lower interest rates of the alternative loan offer.
- KonferenzbeitragVerzichten die Landwirte zu (Un)Recht auf den Einsatz von Optimierungsverfahren?(Integration und Datensicherheit – Anforderungen, Konflikte und Perspektiven, Referate der 25. GIL Jahrestagung, 2004) Mußhoff, Oliver; Hirschauer, NorbertIn this paper we examine the usefulness of optimisation methods for practical farm program decisions. We inspect three Brandenburg cash crop farms over the last five years and find that their total gross margins could have been increased significantly by using optimisation methods. Our ex post planning approach uses the information available to the farmers in the respective planning year and provides us with optimised alternative programs. Taking account of the actual yields and prices in the following year, the total gross margins of the optimised and observed programs are compared. The planning approach includes systematic time series analyses of uncertain gross margins and their correlations in a stochastic programming approach. The variance of the observed program which implicitly reflects the risk attitude of the individual farmer is used as an up-per limit of the optimised program.
