- KonferenzbeitragA business view on component governance for TelCos(INFORMATIK 2010. Service Science – Neue Perspektiven für die Informatik. Band 1, 2010) Reinisch, Sebastian; Mertens, RobertChanging conditions in current telecommunications markets created a greater need for telecommunications companies to provide a wider range of products and to produce them fast and flexible. To be successful in the Next-Generation markets for communications and content products the modern telecommunications companies are under pressure to review and optimise their business processes and organisational structures. The implementation of capable IT structures will be a key success factor to be profitable. This paper describes the market challenges of telecommunications companies and depicts three different governance methods currently applied in telecommunications companies. It also illustrates why component governance is the most appropriate approach for TelCos and which problems are emerging during the application of this approach in practice. The paper concludes with an idea for further research that addresses these challenges.
- KonferenzbeitragComponent governance as a key factor for IT business alignment of telecommunications companies (extended abstract)(Informatik 2009 – Im Focus das Leben, 2009) Reinisch, Sebastian; Beyer, Uwe; Mertens, Robert
- KonferenzbeitragA flexible high-performance service-oriented production system for Triple Play telecommunication products(INFORMATIK 2008. Beherrschbare Systeme – dank Informatik. Band 1, 2008) Steffens, Timo; Mertens, Robert; Andres, StefanThis paper introduces concepts for a service-oriented IT-landscape supporting flexible and high-performance provisioning of telecommunication products. On the one hand these concepts are designed to be generic in order to facilitate a short time-to-market for future products. On the other hand the concepts guarantee a scalable and high-performance operation of the system. The concepts have been developed in cooperation with and successfully employed in a major German telecommunications company.

- KonferenzbeitragNext-generation IT architecture for telecommunication companies - a factory based approach(INFORMATIK 2011 – Informatik schafft Communities, 2011) Kettern, Johannes; Frey, Frank Joachim; Mertens, Robert; Andres, Stefan; Dorhmi, SamirThe IT landscape of telecommunications companies is far more dynamic than IT landscapes in most other application domains. The main reason for this is the fast development of new technologies that form the basis of new telecommunications products. These products very often require new or adapted technological devices as well as IT processes for production, operation and assurance of new or existing products. The factory based approach presented in this paper tackles this problem by separating those parts of a process in production, operation or assurance affected by specific technologies from other processes. In the factory based approach all processes affected by a technology are bundled in a factory and all factories have a common interface that enables relatively effortless replacement of one factory by another factory that supplies equivalent services.
- KonferenzbeitragPath Searching with Transit Nodes in Fast Changing Telecommunications Networks(INFORMATIK 2008. Beherrschbare Systeme – dank Informatik. Band 1, 2008) Mertens, Robert; Stachowiak, Joerg; Steffens, TimoTransit nodes are a concept that has proven to speed up pathfinding in roadnetworks considerably. The main idea of transit nodes is to precompute paths for selected routes and use these as shortcuts during the search. While this method can be employed for road networks that remain static over a period of time, it can not be directly applied to complex fast changing networks such as those used for telecommunication since precomputed shortcuts can become invalid at any time. In this paper, an approach is presented that is based on transit nodes but extends the concept to accommodate for the special requirements of fast changing networks.
