- ZeitschriftenartikelEffektivität von Lösungsansätzen zur Bekämpfung von Spam(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 46, No. 4, 2004) Schryen, GuidoSpam as unsolicited email has certainly crossed the border of just being bothersome. In 2003, it surpassed legitimate email — growing to more than 50% of all Internet emails. Annually, it causes economic harms of several billion Euros. Fighting spam, beside legal approaches especially technical means are deployed in practical systems, mainly focussing on blocking and filtering mechanisms. This article introduces into the spam field and describes, assesses, and classifies the currently most important approaches against spam.

- ZeitschriftenartikelElektronisches Papier — Displaytechnologie mit weitem Anwendungsspektrum(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 44, No. 6, 2002) Schryen, Guido; Karla, JürgenElectronic paper is a new material-technological stream in display research: electronic paper consists of a thin, flexible plastic film within which charged particles are aligned due to electric fields. Advantages over traditional technologies like LCD displays include lower production costs (lower process costs as well as lower material costs) and lower weight. Furthermore a better readability emerges because of better reflection, contrast, and larger viewing angles. This potential can be tapped for display panels, computer displays, and mobile devices. Almost every material can be used as substrate, hence flexible ones can be used as media for newspapers and journals. The leading US companies E Ink and Gyricon Media offer an increasingly broader range of products based on electronic paper.
- KonferenzbeitragA fuzzy model for IT security investments(Sicherheit 2010. Sicherheit, Schutz und Zuverlässigkeit, 2010) Schryen, GuidoThis paper presents a fuzzy set based decision support model for taking uncertainty into account when making security investment decisions for distributed systems. The proposed model is complementary to probabilistic approaches and useful in situations where probabilistic information is either unavailable or not appropriate to reliably predict future conditions. We first present the specification of a formal security language that allows to specify under which conditions a distributed system is protected against security violations. We show that each term of the security language can be transformed into an equivalent propositional logic term. Then we use propositional logic terms to define a fuzzy set based decision model. This optimization model incorporates uncertainty with regard to the impact of investments on the achieved security levels of components of the distributed system. The model also accounts for budget and security constraints, in order to be applicable in practice.

- KonferenzbeitragHow security problems can compromise remote Internet voting systems(Electronic voting in Europe - Technology, law, politics and society, workshop of the ESF TED programme together with GI and OCG, 2004) Schryen, GuidoRemote Internet voting systems still suffer from many security problems which rely on the clients, the servers, and the network connections. Denial-ofservice attacks and viruses still belong to the most challenging security issues. Projects and studies like the "Voting Technology Project" of CALTECH and MIT or SERVE of the US Department of Defense set up to gain experience evidence many of the notional weaknesses of current Internet voting systems.
