- KonferenzbeitragStoff- und Energiebilanzierung von Organisationen: Eine Synthese aus DIN EN ISO 14031 und DIN EN ISO 14040-14043(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Arndt, Hans-Knud; Günther, Oliver
- KonferenzbeitragLandscape Structure Model(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Grillmayer, RolandTo report on the state of the nature environment as requested for example by the sustainable development strategy of the European Union, information on the landscape and the underlying processes forming the landscape is needed. In principle we can differentiate two basic approaches to analyse the processes forming the landscape. These processes can be measured directly using measurements of energyand nutrient flows. However, information on the processes can be derived indirectly using the landscape structure as main information source. The basic idea is, that the landscape structure, i.e., what we see today, was produced by flows yesterday, so there is a linkage between structure and processes (FORMAN, 1995). In this paper we give a review about the theory of landscape ecology, define the term “landscape structure” and discuss the processes occurring in the landscape.
- KonferenzbeitragA System for Data Collection of Environmental Information(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Qazzaz, Bahjat; Abdalhaq, Baker; Tamajon, Daniel; Rexachs, Dolores I.; Luque, EmilioThe changes in the nature of forest ecosystems require a continuous monitoring and management in order to face the problems that may appear due to these changes. The main goal of FOREMMS, (EU project), is to develop and demonstrate an advanced forest environmental and management prototype system. In the framework of FOREMMS we are describing the design and implementation of an autonomous system, based on a handheld PC as the field device, for the acquisition of manual measures in the field about the environmental parameters of forests. The application personalizes the handheld PC as a system for data collection so that, the user can introduce all the manual measurements field data easily, send them to the lab to be completed and later on to database. This system can be useful also for other data gathering applications such as fire prevention monitoring systems and it can be used for calibration of remote sensing systems.
- KonferenzbeitragModelling European Environmental Communication – Information Flows Supporting Decisions towards a Sustainable Development(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Pillmann, WernerEnvironmental informatics merges environmental research with the application of latest technology. New issues and increasing specialization broaden the field of “Enviromatics” significantly. Especially environmental communication and education links computer applications for environmental protection to the public debate on sustainable development. To provide orientation in this emerging discipline, a conceptual model of communication on the basis of enviromatics is developed. Information sources in science, economy and society, the information diffusion and some effects of environmental information in controlling modernization and empowerment are presented. The background is built by leading edge technologies, as driving forces for communication. Finally the model is applied for structuring ENVIROINFO VIENNA and the conference proceedings, establishing the basis for a “Systems Conference on Environmental Informatics”.
- KonferenzbeitragRemote Sensing in Urban Areas – Recent Advances(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Piringer, Martin; Baumann, KathrinThe population in cities is increasing world-wide, and therefore more and more attention is paid to the air quality in large cities. Austrian and European initiatives and projects to improve our knowledge on urban-related modifications of the atmospheric boundary layer with the aid of ground-based remote sensing devices are presented. Results are encouraging and will help to develop reliable air pollution models in the future.
- KonferenzbeitragFloating Car Data as Data Source for Modelling of Air and Noise Pollution in Regions with High Traffic Density(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Nowotny, Bernhard; Maurer, Peter; Schechtner, Katja; Winiwarter, Wilfried; Zajicek, JürgenAs air and noise pollution models depend on real-time traffic data, the integration of traffic information (air and noise emissions) has been recognised as an important step in urban areas. As the equipment of fixed measurement stations for traffic, air pollution and noise detection is limited by financial constraints information from cars equipped with sensors (Floating Cars) supplements information from these sources. The position and the speed of cars are acquired by satellite navigation in combination with mobile communication, cellular phone tracking systems and long wave positioning. Further knowledge of the relation among traffic-related parameters is used to estimate traffic flow in the road network. Based on the estimations available models for traffic-related air and noise emissions can be applied to calculate emission inventories with an improved spatial and temporal resolution. So the development of methods for the detection, storage and interpretation of Floating Car data has the potential of improving the information basis for modelling of the traffic situation, air and noise pollution in regions with high traffic density.
- KonferenzbeitragUser Requirements and Prototyping for Forest and Climate Change Information Systems(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Maguire, Martin C.This paper reports on Human Factors activities carried out in the development of two environmental information systems being developed as projects within the EC IST programme. The FOREMMS project is concerned with providing status information and predictions about forest status and health across Europe. The EUROCLIM project is to provide information about changes in the Artic region (e.g. glaciers, snow cover, sea ice) to form a historical database and to feed into a model to help predict climate change in Europe. User information and presentation requirements of scientific users were defined for both systems. It is also intended that both systems will provide information to public users to make them aware about environmental issues and trends in an objective way. This paper discusses the processes involved in making these systems effective for the end-users.
- KonferenzbeitrageHIS InterStore: E-Commerce with Environmental Data(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Ruzicka, Ronald G.A lot of environmental data today is measured twice, because the data provider and the data consumer do not know each other. On the other hand the need for environmental data increases every year. eHIS InterStore offers a platform for distributing and selling environmental data via the Internet, using maps as an easy-to-use selection tool. eHIS InterStore uses state-of-the-art IT environments to make data evaluation, data delivery and optional payment as easy as possible. Although it does not seem so, this system even supports the Aarhus Convention.
- KonferenzbeitragComputational and Media Resources in Adult Environmental Education: A Case Study to Automobilist Sector in Curitiba’s Metropolitan Region - Brazil(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Filho, Ivo LessaEnvironmental education has proved to be a powerful organizational tool of incentive to the social responsibility of an organization and its employees. To achieve and realize this result, it is necessary to investigate which are the media resource material and approaches that have been used for training assignment and informal education turned to the employee's environmental education in the organizations. These resources have to be compared and adapted to the recommendations of environmental education practice. Following this strategy, three companies have been studied according to their qualitative character: Volvo of Brasil, Robert Bosch Ltd., Renault of Brazil automobilistics Ltd., all of them situated in Curitiba’s metropolitan region-Brazil. This survey and its deep analysis is the first step to carry out innovative on-the-job training and in a wider sense environmental management in the organizations.
- KonferenzbeitragEstimation of Costs for Maintaining Landscape Elements by the Example of Baden-Wuerttemberg(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Kapfer, Marti; Osinski, Elisabeth; Kantelhardt, JochenThe aim of this study was to estimate the costs arising from the maintenance of landscape elements in landscapes with different site conditions. For example, the distribution of hedgerows on sites of varying agricultural quality were considered. The calculations were undertaken on the entire area of Baden-Wuerttemberg, comprising various administrative districts. The association between ecological and economic information was analysed statistically and with the help of GIS. The results indicate that the costs for landscape element protection differ within the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and that there is a high pressure on hedgerow biotopes existing in certain districts. Measures for protection such as agri-environmental programmes should consider the different landscape-dependent costs.
