- KonferenzbeitragEnactment of Adaptation in Data Stream Processing with Latency Implications(Software Engineering 2020, 2020) Qin, Cui; Eichelberger, Holger; Schmid, KlausThis summary refers to the paper Enactment of adaptation in data stream processing with latency implications – A systematic literature review. This paper is a journal paper published in Information and Software Technology (IST) in July 2019. Runtime adaptation in stream processing plays a significant role in supporting the optimization of data processing tasks. In recent years, runtime adaptation, particularly its enactment, has received significant interest in scientific literature. However, so far no categorization of the enactment approaches for runtime adaptation in stream processing has been established. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR), where we identify and characterize different approaches towards the enactment of runtime adaptation in stream processing with a main focus on latency as quality dimension. We discovered 75 relevant papers out of 244 papers from the search. We identified 17 different enactment categories and developed a taxonomy to characterize all possible enactment approaches. We extracted the realization techniques of each identified enactment approach and classified them into categories. Furthermore, we identified 9 categories of processing problems, 6 adaptation goals, 9 evaluation metrics and 12 evaluation parameters from the identified enactment approaches. The research interest on enactment approaches has significantly increased in recent years. The most commonly applied enactment approaches are parameter adaptation to tune parameters or settings of the processing, load balancing used to re-distribute workloads, and processing scaling to dynamically scale up and down the processing.
- ZeitschriftenartikelPotentials of Virtual Reality as an Instrument for Research and Education(i-com: Vol. 18, No. 1, 2019) Zender, Raphael; Knoth, Alexander H.; Fischer, Martin H.; Lucke, UlrikeVirtual Reality (VR) is currently on everyone’s lips for various purposes. Although the hype is currently nearing its productive plateau, there are still uncertainties about the utilization and potential of the technology in research and educational contexts. Together with the two following articles on the subject of VR research, this article provides an overview of the inherent potential as well as remaining challenges in the use of VR as an instrument for research and education. These will be clarified and critically examined on the basis of specific academic projects. Based on this, the article concludes with a comprehensive look on the need for further discussion of ethical issues as the key for VR success in research and education.
- ZeitschriftenartikelSemantic Web: State of the Art and Adoption in Corporations(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 30, No. 2, 2016) Peinl, RenéThe Semantic Web has matured from a vision and research area of a few AI specialists to an important technology being used in a large number of research and a few practice projects. Most building blocks of the Semantic Web stack are filled with concrete technologies and W3C standards, but there are still enough areas for research. However, even with existing technologies, the potential of semantic applications within corporations is not yet fully harnessed as the adoption of Semantic Web technologies lacks behind other technologies like NoSQL databases or Web 2.0 technologies. This paper reviews the state of the art of Semantic Web technologies, discusses important terms and developments as well as currently active research streams. It further analyses available tools and applications with a focus on corporate scenarios and open source software and concludes with the suggestion of an architecture for a corporate semantic intranet.
- ZeitschriftenartikelTracing local energy markets: A literature review(it - Information Technology: Vol. 61, No. 2-3, 2019) Mengelkamp, Esther; Diesing, Julius; Weinhardt, ChristofWe conduct a structured literature review on the concept of local energy markets (LEMs). LEMs have gained increasing attention in the last two decades. Yet, a holistic definition and clear demarcation of LEMs is still missing. The review shows current works to shift their focus from conceptual implementation and design to increasingly realistic applications of LEMs. Secure access to (near) real-time smart meter data is a prerequisite for LEMs. Current research gaps, e. g. the inclusion of network constraints, agent-centric LEM designs or a comparison of market mechanisms, are identified.
