- KonferenzbeitragA Case Study on Model-Driven and Conventional Software Development: The Palladio Editor(Software Engineering 2007 – Beiträge zu den Workshops – Fachtagung des GI-Fachbereichs Softwaretechnik, 2007) Krogmann, Klaus; Becker, SteffenThe actual benefits of model-driven approaches compared to code-centric development have not been systematically investigated. This paper presents a case study in which functional identical software was once developed in a code-centric, conventional style and once using Eclipse-based model-driven development tools. In our specific case, the model-driven approach could be carried in 11% of the time of the conventional approach, while simultaneously improving code quality.
- KonferenzbeitragData Requirements for Robust Machine Learning in High Variance Industrial Environments(Softwaretechnik-Trends Band 43, Heft 4, 2023) Ghanem, AbrahamMachine Learning (ML) based industrial applications deployed in high variance dynamic environments present a new set of challenges. The performance of such systems is directly linked to the nature of the data it has been subjected to. Using the computer vision-based ML applications in the logistics industry as a case study, due to their high variance environment and strict requirements, we try to address the issue of understanding the data requirements for the successful development and deployment of such applications. We propose a systematic approach to address high variance scenarios with limited relevant data availability, covering both real data collection and synthetic data generation, highlighting their requirements and effective utilization methods.
- KonferenzbeitragDesigning Automotive Case Studies for Architectural Security Analyses(Softwaretechnik-Trends Band 43, Heft 4, 2023) Boltz, Nicolas; Walter, Maximilian; Gerking, ChristopherDigitalization is one of the biggest drivers of advancements in the modern automotive domain. The resulting increase in communication is leading to a more intensive exchange of data and the opening up of for merly closed systems. This raises questions about security and data protection. Software architecture analyses can help identify potential issues, thereby making systems more secure and compliant with data protection laws. Such analyses require representative case studies for development and evaluation. In this paper, we showcase the results of applying requirements and processes for case-study research during three bachelor theses with students. The resulting three case studies center around the automotive and mobility domain and focus on different security and privacy properties. We discuss our insights and experiences regarding the creation of case studies.
- TextdokumentEnabling SMEs to comply with the complex new EU data protection regulation(Open Identity Summit 2019, 2019) Fähnrich, Nicolas; Kubach, MichaelThe European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) introduces privacy requirements that pose a complex challenge especially for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). In this paper, we present a software-supported process model developed by us that helps SMEs to establish processes ensuring the rights of the data subjects and prepare the documentation that is necessary to comply with the GDPR. Three small case studies illustrate the work with the process model and lessons learned from these practical applications of our tool give further insights into the topic.
- WorkshopbeitragExploring Interactive Information Radiators – A Longitudinal Real-World Case Study(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Workshopband, 2019) Ott, Florian; Koch, MichaelWe present a longitudinal case study of implementing inter-active information radiators in practice. The insights from the case study include the importance of including users in finding relevant information, and of presenting this information in an attractive way. The semi-public space poses special challenges for design and clearly shows the need for doing research through (longitudinal) deployment-based studies. On the other side, the study also shows some problems of doing longitudinal case studies of semi-public installations – particularly field access and availability of quantitative data.

- KonferenzbeitragThe JPetStore Suite: A concise Experiment Setup for Research(Softwaretechnik-Trends Band 39, Heft 3, 2019) Jung, Reiner; Adolf, MarcViable experiment suites are in high demand by scientists in software engineering and especially for software quality. In particular, easy to understand yet feature rich case studies are needed to assess approaches, methods and tools for software qualities, like performance, usability, privacy and security. Several attempts have been made to create reusable setups. Unfortunately, they focus on the software alone, without or limited documentation, workloads, and prepared deployments, harming reusability and repeatability. This hinders our research. To circumvent these limitations, we created a JPetStore based experiment suite. Our suite includes distributed and single service variants with and without instrumentation, proper workload drivers, and experiment setups. All parts are documented to support scientists creating experiments. Using our suite fosters comparability and reproducibility of research making it more influential. Furthermore, our suite can be used as blue print for more complex suites.
- ZeitschriftenartikelUsing Cultural Probes in the Sensitive Research Setting of Informal Caregiving. A Case Study(i-com: Vol. 17, No. 2, 2018) Hensely-Schickinger, Susanne; Schorch, Marén; Tellioğlu, HildaThis case study report covers our experiences in using Cultural Probes during the first phase of our European and interdisciplinary research project TOPIC (The Online Platform for Informal Caregivers). In that stage of our research, we focused on two major issues: first, describing and analyzing the characteristics of the care and coordination work of elderly informal caregivers, and second, on first implications for design for the field of informal care. Although our general methodological approach was qualitative (ethnographic) with participant observation and interviewing, we included Cultural Probes as an additional method to ethnography for gaining insight information about the care practices by the means of self-observation of and reflection by the informal caregivers. The paper describes our adaptation of the Cultural Probes approach, the similarities and differences to Gaver et al. [1999. Interactions. 6(1): 21–29], the items of our TOPIC Cultural Probes Kit in detail, and re-constructs the design process of one of the items (the actimoClock). Based on the experiences of our participants with the probes kit and our analyses of that use, we also present lessons learned, pros and cons for including that method in the sensitive setting of informal caregiving.
- ZeitschriftenartikelWie erstellt man ein objektorientiertes Analysemodell?(Informatik-Spektrum: Vol. 20, No. 1, 1997) Balzert, HeideMethode definiert. Then the requirements for an object oriented analysis method are set up. Using an industrial case study a systematic, detailed and iterative method is presented, which shows a further development of different methods. With the help of selected check lists it is shown, how an OOA model is created and checked in a constructive and analytical way. The article ends with suggestions for the quality assurance and an adjustment of the postulated requirements of a method.
