- KonferenzbeitragAdapting virtual trainings of applied skills to cognitive processes in medical and health care education within the DiViFaG project(DELFI 2020 – Die 18. Fachtagung Bildungstechnologien der Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V., 2020) Hainke, Carolin; Pfeiffer, ThiesThe use of virtual reality technology in education rises in popularity, especially in professions that include the training of practical skills. By offering the possibility to repeatedly practice and apply skills in controllable environments, VR training can help to improve the education process. The training simulations that are going to be developed within this project will make use of the high controllability by evaluating behavioral data as well as gaze-based data during the training process. This analysis can reveal insights in the user’s mental states and offers the opportunity of autonomous training adaption.
- KonferenzbeitragCognitive Load during First Contact with Mixed Reality Learning Environments(Mensch und Computer 2021 - Tagungsband, 2021) Kockord, René; Bodensiek, OliverMixed Reality (MR) is a growing field in educational settings with increasing importance. Nevertheless, little research has been done so far on howto design a user friendly first contact with this technology. Therefore, this study investigates the challenges and problems that arise when using MR with little to no experience and focuses on the cognitive load of the participants. For this purpose, three tasks are first performed in the natural environment using physical dice, which are then performed by the same participants in MR with virtual dice. Questionnaires are used to assess cognitive load. The problems and challenges are addressed with semi-structured interviews. As a result, a significant increase in cognitive load is observed from the first run (non-MR) to the second run (MR), which is underpinned by the number of challenges encountered. Therefore, further research of the reasons for the increase in cognitive load is needed in order to counteract it with an appropriate design of Mixed Reality Learning Environments.
- ZeitschriftenartikelCognitive state detection with eye tracking in the field: an experience sampling study and its lessons learned(i-com: Vol. 23, No. 1, 2024) Langner, Moritz; Toreini, Peyman; Maedche, AlexanderIn the future, cognitive activity will be tracked in the same way how physical activity is tracked today. Eye-tracking technology is a promising off-body technology that provides access to relevant data for cognitive activity tracking. For building cognitive state models, continuous and longitudinal collection of eye-tracking and self-reported cognitive state label data is critical. In a field study with 11 students, we use experience sampling and our data collection system esmLoop to collect both cognitive state labels and eye-tracking data. We report descriptive results of the field study and develop supervised machine learning models for the detection of two eye-based cognitive states: cognitive load and flow. In addition, we articulate the lessons learned encountered during data collection and cognitive state model development to address the challenges of building generalizable and robust user models in the future. With this study, we contribute knowledge to bring eye-based cognitive state detection closer to real-world applications.
- WorkshopbeitragDesign and Evaluation of a User Interface to Facilitate Cardiac Monitoring(Mensch und Computer 2017 - Tagungsband, 2017) Aures, Christina; Beuter, Christian; Kirsch, AlexandraPatient monitoring devices are complex and highly specialized systems. We present an enhanced display of the alarms that facilitates cardiac monitoring and supports the clinicians during the diagnosis process. Three different interactive user interface prototypes were developed using web technologies. To maximize acceptance among professionals, we extended the ECG parameter of an existing monitoring interface with visual cues directly at the wave, to show where exactly an alarm happened, an alarm timeline beneath the wave (showing the last events) and an animated detailed view of an event. The new user interface lowered the perceived cognitive load and accelerated the detection of abnormalities in the wave.
- KonferenzbeitragExploring the effect of transient cognitive load on bodily arousal and secondary task performance(Mensch und Computer 2020 - Tagungsband, 2020) Ehlers, JanHuman failure constitutes a major cause for accidents of all kinds. Especially drowsiness or situations of cognitive overload impair the ability to react quickly and appropriately to critical events. The present study applies brief periods of monotonous and repetitive trains of thoughts to induce states of hypovigilance and, on the other hand, arithmetical exercises to increase cognitive load. Aim is to determine whether transient cognitive events exert an influence on bodily arousal (here: pupil diameter) as well as on secondary task reaction times. Findings confirm that pupil diameter constitutes a valid indicator of cognitive load. Reaction times emerge particularly slow during cognitive overload, whereas the risk of overlooking brief cue stimuli is not increased. However, it remains unclear whether a valid state of cognitive underload can be induced on basis of short periods of repetitive thoughts. While the associated pupil size changes do not differ from baseline dynamics, behavioural reactions occur considerably slower compared to a control condition.
- KonferenzbeitragHuman-Machine Interaction in Care-Education(Mensch und Computer 2017 - Workshopband, 2017) Reichold, Johannes; Agrawal, Ankita; Thurlings, Marieke; Cohen, Iris; Weber-Fiori, Barbara; Rölle, Anita; Hassan, Muneeb; Dürr, Maximilian; Pfeil, Ulrike; Pape, Anna-Antonia; Grünert, Gerd; Schmidt, Artur; Pfeil, Markus; Fäßler, Victor; Jauch, Volker; Reiterer, Harald; Winter, Maik; Ertel, Wolfgang; Eberhardt, JörgThe research project ERTRAG, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, aims to develop a virtual ergonomics trainer for nursing as well as elderly care education. The trainer supports apprentices conducting the care related motions in an ergonomically correct fashion, thereby helping to prevent work-related health problems such as dorsal pain. The user interface of the ERTRAG system for instruction and feedback adjusts to the individual preferences and needs, as well as to the current cognitive state of the user. This adaptive, highly customizable human-machine interaction fosters effective and long-lasting learning.
