    Knowledge Processing for Cognitive Robots
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Tenorth, Moritz; Jain, Dominik; Beetz, Michael
Knowledge processing methods are an important resource for robots that perform challenging tasks in complex, dynamic environments. When applied to robot control, such methods allow to write more general and flexible control programs and enable reasoning about the robot’s observations, the actions involved in a task, action parameters and the reasons why an action was performed. However, the application of knowledge representation and reasoning techniques to autonomous robots creates several hard research challenges. In this article, we discuss some of these challenges and our approaches to solving them.

    KI braucht Gefühle
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Dietrich, Dietmar; Bruckner, Dietmar

    Real-time Image-based Localization for Hand-held 3D-modeling
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Mair, Elmar; Strobl, Klaus H.; Bodenmüller, Tim; Suppa, Michael; Burschka, Darius
We present a self-referencing hand-held scanning device for vision-based close-range 3D-modeling. Our approach replaces external global tracking devices with ego-motion estimation directly from the camera used for reconstruction. The system is capable of online estimation of the 6DoF pose on hand-held devices with high motion dynamics especially in rotational components. Inertial information supports directly the tracking process to allow for robust tracking and feature management in highly dynamic environments. We introduce a weighting function for landmarks that contribute to the pose estimation increasing the accuracy of the localization and filtering outliers in the tracking process. We validate our approach with experimental results showing the robustness and accuracy of the algorithm. We compare the results to external global referencing solutions used in current modeling systems.

Plan-Based Control of Joint Human-Robot Activities
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Kirsch, Alexandra; Kruse, Thibault; Sisbot, E. Akin; Alami, Rachid; Lawitzky, Martin; Brščić, Dražen; Hirche, Sandra; Basili, Patrizia; Glasauer, Stefan
Cognition in technical systems is especially relevant for the interaction with humans. We present a newly emerging application for autonomous robots: companion robots that are not merely machines performing tasks for humans, but assistants that achieve joint goals with humans. This collaborative aspect entails specific challenges for AI and robotics. In this article, we describe several planning and action-related problems for human-robot collaboration and point out the challenges to implement cognitive robot assistants.

Fallbasierte Entscheidungsunterstützung für die Strukturplanung von Jahresabschlussprüfungen
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Reiter, Tobias

Learning from Nature: Biologically Inspired Robot Navigation and SLAM—A Review
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Sünderhauf, Niko; Protzel, Peter
In this paper we summarize the most important neuronal fundamentals of navigation in rodents, primates and humans. We review a number of brain cells that are involved in spatial navigation and their properties. Furthermore, we review RatSLAM, a working SLAM system that is partially inspired by neuronal mechanisms underlying mammalian spatial navigation.

    3D-Roboterkartenbau in Osnabrück
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Hertzberg, Joachim; Lingemann, Kai; Lörken, Christopher; Nüchter, Andreas; Stiene, Stefan; Wiemann, Thomas

    Surface Representations for 3D Mapping
(KI - Künstliche Intelligenz: Vol. 24, No. 3, 2010) Birk, Andreas; Pathak, Kaustubh; Vaskevicius, Narunas; Pfingsthorn, Max; Poppinga, Jann; Schwertfeger, Sören
Point clouds, i.e., sets of 3D coordinates of surface point samples from obstacles, are the predominant form of representation for 3D mapping. They are the raw data format of most 3D sensors and the basis for state of the art algorithms for 3D scan registration. It is argued here that point clouds have severe limitations and a case is made for a necessary paradigm shift to surface based representations. In addition to several conceptual arguments, it is shown how a surface based approach can be used for fast and robust registration of 3D data without the need for robot motion estimates from other sensors. Concretely, a short overview on own work dubbed 3D Plane SLAM is presented. It features an extraction of planes with uncertainties from 3D range scans. Two scans can then be registered by determining the correspondence set that maximizes the global rigid body motion constraint while finding the related optimal decoupled rotations and translations with their underlying uncertainties. The registered scans are embedded in pose-graph SLAM for loop closing and relaxation.
