Leider wird bei der recht marktschreierisch geführten Diskussion um Java häufig unterschlagen, dass viele der Java immanenten Qualitäten keineswegs neu sind, sondern sich (besonders im Umfeld der Sprache Pascal) seit langem bewähren. Der vorliegende Artikel beleuchtet den rasanten Aufstieg von Java, zeigt bislang weitgehend unbekannte Zusammenhänge zwischen Java und Pascal auf, und wagt schliesslich eine Prognose über die Zukunft von Java.Summary The current discussion of Java is charakterized by much hyperbole and often fails to mention that many of Java’s distinguishing features have previously appeared in the context of other languages, notably Pascal. This article illuminates the remarkably rise of Java, exposes a number of little-known parallels between Java and pascal, and finally speculates on the future of Java.

- ZeitschriftenartikelDie Sicherheitsaspekte von Java(Informatik-Spektrum: Vol. 21, No. 1, 1998) Posegga, JoachimJava stellt, insbesondere hinsichtlich des Applet-Konzepts, eine äußerst interessante Technologie dar, die darauf beruht, Programme über ein Netz zu transportieren und auszuführen. Aus der Sicht der IT–Sicherheit ist ein solches Vorgehen jedoch nicht unproblematisch. Im folgenden wird diese Problematik näher beleuchtet, das Java zugrundeliegende Konzept erläutert und eingeordnet. Das Ziel ist, den Leser in die Lage zu versetzen, die tatsächlich mit dem Einsatz von Java verbundenen Sicherheitsrisiken bei Anwendungen einschätzen zu können.Summary Java is a very promising emerging technology, in particular because of the concept of downloadable code behind Java applets. The underlying idea is to provide smallish applications (applets) in a network, which can be downloaded and executed as needed. Unfortunately, such a procedure is quite problematic from the perspective of IT security. This paper investigates the problems involved with using such downloadable code, and reviews the solutions proposed in the Java runtime environment. The aim of the paper is to support the reader in understanding the technology and help him/her to asses the actual risks of Java applications.

Allerdings hat es sich durch das große und schnell wachsende Informationsangebot im WWW als notwendig erwiesen, über die reine Navigation in diesem Hypertextsystem hinaus Werkzeuge zur Verfügung zu stellen, welche die riesige hier vorliegende „Datenbank“ WWW zielgerichtet und effizient auswerten können. Solche Werkzeuge werden als Suchmaschinen bezeichnet; sie werden in diesem Übersichtsartikel vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus werden zur Zeit diskutierte Ansätze beschrieben, Techniken des Formulierens und Verarbeitens von Anfragen, wie man sie aus Datenbanken kennt, auf das WWW anzuwenden. Die (berechtigte) Hoffnung ist, mit der Übertragung von Datenbanktechniken auf das Web zu einem effizienteren und komfortableren Umgang mit der vorliegenden Informationsflut zu gelangen.Summary By using the World Wide Web (WWW) it has become easy to access information which is distributed over the entire Internet. However, due to the immense and rapidly growing supply of information it has become necessary to go beyond pure hypertext navigation, and to provide tools which are able to utilize this huge „database“ WWW in a goal-oriented and efficient way. Such tools, which are collectively called search engines, are surveyed in this paper. In addition, recent approaches for applying techniques for the specification and processing of queries, as known from databases, in the context of the Web are described. There is hope that such an exploitation will lead to a more efficient and more comfortable way of dealing with the apparent flood of information.

Um effizient auf Datenbanksysteme (DBS) in Internetanwendungen zugreifen zu können, müssen geeignete Übergänge zwischen WWW und DBS benutzt werden. Wir stellen anhand eines Forderungskatalogs die Eigenschaften aktueller Verfahren vor, ordnen sie den Architekturen der Informationsverarbeitung zu und diskutieren die Möglichkeiten weiterer Entwicklungen.Summary The importance of Database Systems (DBS) for the World Wide Web (WWW) is increasing significantly, because they do not only support the organization of large amounts of information but also the transaction-based and secure management of data and business processes. In order to access database systems from Internet applications efficiently, appropriate transitions between WWW and DBS have to be applied. By means of a catalogue of demands, we will present the features of current methods, assign them to corresponding architectures of information processing and discuss the possibilities of further developments.
