Semantic networks represent dependencies between concepts or topics, and thus are well-suited not only for processing by computers but also for knowledge transfer to learners. A challenge is to combine knowledge networks (for self-directed learning) with traditional, hierarchical courseware. The paper presents an approach for integration of both, semantic networks and hierarchical structures, within a single learning object based on the eLearning markup language <ML>3.en
