Our goal was to assess current modus operandi and to identify design implications. We have carried out two expert interviews, two field observations and four group discussions with experts based on a fully functional prototype as IT artifact to concretize discussions. Key insights are that in this case localization of relevant resources is the most important aspect of situation awareness, and that state of current knowledge needs to be clearly shared within the command center.

- KonferenzbeitragNational Park Information System(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Almer, Alexander; Zeiner, Herwig; Derler, Christian; Stelzl, Harald; Luley, PatrickThe tourism in rural areas and national parks can be regarded as a very sensitive economic factor. On the one hand eco-tourism regions and especially national parks have to present their natural environment and fascinate landscape. On the other hand they have to guide tourist streams to avoid negative effects on their assets. This paper will briefly discuss the current situation of the digital presentation of national parks and includes also tourism aspects in the surrounding rural areas. It will discuss proposals for a novel interactive multimedia information system, while focusing on the various components of such a system.
- KonferenzbeitragNATURNET-REDIME New Education and Decision Support Model for Active Behaviour in Sustainable Development Based on Innovative Web Services and Qualitative Reasoning(Managing Environmental Knowledge, 2006) Almer, Alexander; Barz, Peter; Bredeweg, Bert; Nuttle, Tim; Charvat, Karel; Iercan, Octavian; Jochum, Markus; Koch, Barbara; Salles, Paulo; Stelzl, HaraldNaturNet-Redime is a project co-funded by the European Commission within the Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006). The general objective of NaturNet-Redime project is the provision of a web portal for the improvement of knowledge and the provision of education concerning all aspects of Sustainable Development. The project will further develop and demonstrate prototype technology and educational programmes towards implementing the European Union's Strategy for Sustainable Development. Extensive stakeholder understanding of the various factors and tools that affect sustainable development is one of the main goals of the NaturNet-Redime project. Two approaches are being taken in the project. The first is an interoperable internet architecture that supports innovative presentation and visualisation of data and tools for learning about sustainability. The second supports developing a deep understanding about cause and effect processes related to sustainability by learner interaction with qualitative reasoning models of sustainable development situations.
- KonferenzbeitragVirtual Environmental Scenarios Applied ina Geo-Multimedia System(The Information Society and Enlargement of the European Union, 2003) Zeiner, Herwig; Almer, Alexander; Stelzl, Harald; Frech, Iris; Haas, WernerMany rural communities are currently attempting to develop their eco-tourism potential. Tourism in these areas, and especially in national parks and nature reserves, can be regarded as a very important but also very sensitive economic issue. It is believed that by using new geo-multimedia technologies to present tourist information on rural areas, sustainable development in these regions will be enhanced. Innovative strategies for the presentation of tourist information need to consider the spatial context of data and must be optimised for important target groups using a range of output devices such as information terminals, PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) and GPS devices. This paper will briefly describe a concept for geo-multimedia information systems and virtual environmental scenarios that fulfil these aspects. The concept development and prototype creation presented in this article was realised by the “ReGeo” project, which is supported by the European Union’s 5th Framework Programme (Multimedia Geoinformation for eCommunities in Rural Areas with Eco-Tourism).
