The use of cloud computing offers companies a multitude of new possibilities through the virtualisation of computing resources in combination with access via the internet. Innovative digital services can be used and offered in the form of cloud services. As a result, the development of cloud services has been strongly promoted in recent years and a large number of patents have been filed. In addition to protection against imitation, patents also serve as a source of information for technical knowledge and for the identification and early recognition of trends. For the analysis of geographical innovation trends in the field of cloud services, patent data is therefore used and the patent activities of the countries are examined in more detail. The use of patent data as an indicator for innovation activities shows that at the geographical level, in addition to the USA, the Asian countries, in particular China, are to be classified as innovation drivers. China has the highest patent activity due to government incentives. The Asian countries, especially China, can therefore be identified as innovation drivers in the area of cloud services alongside the USA.
