- ZeitschriftenartikelA Novel Business Process Prediction Model Using a Deep Learning Method(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 62, No. 2, 2020) Mehdiyev, Nijat; Evermann, Joerg; Fettke, PeterThe ability to proactively monitor business processes is a main competitive differentiator for firms. Process execution logs generated by process aware information systems help to make process specific predictions for enabling a proactive situational awareness. The goal of the proposed approach is to predict the next process event from the completed activities of the running process instance, based on the execution log data from previously completed process instances. By predicting process events, companies can initiate timely interventions to address undesired deviations from the desired workflow. The paper proposes a multi-stage deep learning approach that formulates the next event prediction problem as a classification problem. Following a feature pre-processing stage with n-grams and feature hashing, a deep learning model consisting of an unsupervised pre-training component with stacked autoencoders and a supervised fine-tuning component is applied. Experiments on a variety of business process log datasets show that the multi-stage deep learning approach provides promising results. The study also compared the results to existing deep recurrent neural networks and conventional classification approaches. Furthermore, the paper addresses the identification of suitable hyperparameters for the proposed approach, and the handling of the imbalanced nature of business process event datasets.
- KonferenzbeitragAutomated assessment of process modeling exams: basic ideas and prototypical implementation(Modellierung 2016 - Workshopband, 2016) Thaler, Tom; Houy, Constantin; Fettke, Peter; Loos, PeterThe assessment of process modeling exams is a time consuming and complex task. It is desirable to give each student a detailed feedback on their solution in terms of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic quality. It is obvious that especially in the case of mass courses with hundreds of participants, individual grading of modeling exams by humans is challenging: Besides reliability, consistency, and validity, the efficiency of the grading process must be guaranteed. Against that background, this paper aims at developing first ideas for an automated assessment of process modeling exams. The goal is to improve modeling education while teaching students not only to model correctly but to develop good models. Our ideas were prototypically implemented and applied in an exemplary scenario with promising results. It was possible to identify limitations but also to derive reliable semi-automated approaches for the assessment of process modeling exams.

Various potentials of blockchain technology for tax law and tax administration have been identified. This article analyses the use of blockchain technology in German tax administration using the example of a blockchain-based audit of tax data. The implementation of an access management system is essential for the use of blockchain technology. The integrity of the taxpayer’s tax information and its secure transmission to tax authorities is crucial for the verification of tax matters. For this reason, a blockchain-based verification of accounting data by means of a Standard Audit File and the referencing of necessary tax documents is proposed. However, increasing automation of information management also bear the risks that the tax secrecy of taxpayers is not preserved. Blockchain technology can ensure confidentiality of tax data through the tamper-proof and unalterable documentation of transactions. Authorised access to the taxpayer’s data is managed by a built-in access management.

- ZeitschriftenartikelBusiness process management for Industry 4.0 – Three application cases in the DFKI-Smart-Lego-Factory(it - Information Technology: Vol. 60, No. 3, 2018) Rehse, Jana-Rebecca; Dadashnia, Sharam; Fettke, PeterThe advent of Industry 4.0 is expected to dramatically change the manufacturing industry as we know it today. Highly standardized, rigid manufacturing processes need to become self-organizing and decentralized. This flexibility leads to new challenges to the management of smart factories in general and production planning and control in particular. In this contribution, we illustrate how established techniques from Business Process Management (BPM) hold great potential to conquer challenges in Industry 4.0. Therefore, we show three application cases based on the DFKI-Smart-Lego-Factory, a fully automated “smart factory” built out of LEGO ® bricks, which demonstrates the potentials of BPM methodology for Industry 4.0 in an innovative, yet easily accessible way. For each application case (model-based management, process mining, prediction of manufacturing processes) in a smart factory, we describe the specific challenges of Industry 4.0, how BPM can be used to address these challenges, and, their realization within the DFKI-Smart-Lego-Factory.

- ZeitschriftenartikelCatchword: Blockchains and Enterprise Modeling(Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures (EMISAJ) – International Journal of Conceptual Modeling: Vol. 15, Nr. 16, 2020) Fill, Hans-Georg; Fettke, Peter; Rinderle-Ma, StefanieIn this catchword article we describe the current technological opportunities that are available through blockchain technologies and outline how the field of enterprise modeling can contribute to these developments as well as benefit itself from them. For this purpose, we discuss the technical foundations of blockchains and derive a framework for relating both sides. Finally, it is reported about recent approaches that already engage in these opportunities.
