- KonferenzbeitragA Software Tool for Assessing the Effect of Traffic on Wildlife Populations(The Information Society and Enlargement of the European Union, 2003) Finke, Jens; Köster, Frank; Frank, Karin; Sonnenschein, MichaelThe software tool presented in this paper, named AniTraX, was developed in close cooperation of the Oldenburg Research and Development Institute for Tools and Systems in Computing Science (OFFIS) and the Centre for Environmental Research Leipzig-Halle (UFZ). It is intended to support researchers and managers in the field of species conservation and landscape planning, who have limited experience in modelling or programming. AniTraX implements a generic model for the assessment of wildlife mortality, which is caused by anthropogenic impacts such as road traffic. Though the primarily application of AniTraX is the assessment of quantities such as the number of animals killed or the individual mortality, the tool can also be used as a module for assessing effects on higher hierarchical levels, e.g. population size or viability.
- KonferenzbeitragA Web-based Reviewing Process Guidance System for an Ecological Database of Plant Traits(Informatics for Environmental Protection - Networking Environmental Information, 2005) Ahlers, Dirk; Finke, Jens; Stadler, Michael; Sonnenschein, MichaelThis paper covers the design, development and implementation of a review-based quality management system for an ecological database. We define a quality assurance process similar to that of a peer-review, whereby incoming data is separated into smaller items suitable for individual reviewing based on individual expertise. A simple yet efficient scheduling mechanism is devised that will distribute the trait datasets among the group of reviewers, considering certain particular requirements and conditions.
- KonferenzbeitragAn Information System for the Management of Ecological Simulations(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Köster, Frank; Finke, Jens; Frank, Karin; Sonnenschein, MichaelOur paper deals with the information system Info-X. This software system aims at the management of ecological studies and provides a special functionality for simulation studies. In particular, Info-X can be seen as an approach to conserve the wealth of knowledge and experience, which manifests in models, simulation programs, and their practical applications. This knowledge/experience can broadly support research in theoretical and practical ecology. Info-X provides a state-of-the-art graphical user-interface to browse its database, select desired content, start simulation runs with suitable simulators, and check published results for plausibility/correctness. Furthermore, users can assess and rate the quality of existing content and are invited to submit new content.
- KonferenzbeitragUsing Data Mining Techniques for Exploring the key Features of Plant Dynamics Upon a Newly Built Plant Trait Database(Informatics for Environmental Protection - Networking Environmental Information, 2005) Stadler, Michael; Bekker, Renée M.; Finke, Jens; Kunzmann, Dierk; Sonnenschein, MichaelMost data mining techniques have rarely been used in ecology. To address the specific needs of scientists analysing data from a plant trait database developed during the LEDA project, a web-based data mining tool has been developed. This paper presents the DIONE data miner and the project it has been developed in. It addresses the nature of plant trait data from a data mining perspective and points out problems that arise when preparing data for being mined. Furthermore it contains information about data mining results on plant trait data achieved so far and conclusions towards the applicability of data mining to the fields of ecology, and the newly emerging field of research recently addressed as ecoinformatics.
