- KonferenzbeitragTeaching Optical Principles in XR(INFORMATIK 2023 - Designing Futures: Zukünfte gestalten, 2023) Zengerle, Tobias; Plecher, David A.; Flegr, Salome; Kuhn, Jochen; Fischer, Martin R.Extended Reality (XR) is seeing a massive rise in interest for the use in educational contexts, with a number of studies pointing out the beneficial effects on learning outcome when using immersive XR platforms, compared to classic educational approaches. However, since the necessary hardware has only recently become more accessible and consumer-level XR is just now beginning to push towards more widespread use, these technologies have not yet fully arrived in everyday university teaching. In this work, we will explore how modern XR technologies can be utilized to create new types of gaining knowledge and investigate how they can enhance the learning experience in actual everyday university practice. To this end, we entered into a cooperation with a chair of physics education (LMU) and developed an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) application for their optical physics lab course for students of human medicine. A usability study with a small number of participants yielded a very strong System Usability Score of 82.52, indicating that the resulting application is easy to use and highly accessible, even to users without prior VR experience and putting it in a great spot to be used in future university teaching.
