- KonferenzbeitragCase-based adaptation problems in medicine(WM 2003: Professionelles Wissesmanagement – Erfahrungen und Visionen, Beiträge der 2. Konferenz Professionelles Wissensmanagement, 2003) Schmidt, Rainer; Vorobieva, Olga; Gierl, LotharSo far, Case-based Reasoning has not become as successful in medicine as in some other application domains. One, probably the main reason is that on the one side in Case-based Reasoning the adaptation problem could not be solved in a general way. On the other side in medicine adaptation is often more difficult than in other domains, because usually more and complex features have to be considered. In this paper, we not only summarise experiences with adaptation in medicine, but we want to elaborate typical medical adaptation problems and hope to indicate possibilities how to solve them.
- KonferenzbeitragPrognostic model for early warning of threatening influenza waves(1st German workshop on experience management: sharing experiences about the sharing of experience, 2002) Schmidt, Rainer; Gierl, LotharThe goal of the TeCoMed project is to send early warnings against forthcoming waves or even epidemics of infectious diseases, especially of influenza to interested practitioners, pharmacists etc. in the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The forecast of these waves is based on written confirmations of unfitness for work of the main German health insurance company. Since influenza waves are difficult to predict because of their cyclic but no regular behaviour, statistical methods based on the computation of mean values are not helpful. Instead, we have developed a prognostic model that makes use of similar former courses. Our method combines Case-based Reasoning with Temporal Abstraction to decide wether early warning is appropriate. In this paper, we present this method.
