- KonferenzbeitragAudioFlux: A Proposal for interactive Visual Audio Manipulation(Mensch und Computer 2017 - Workshopband, 2017) Engeln, Lars; Groh, RainerAudioFlux is a proposal for a creative manipulation interface respectively sound design. The spectral data within the frequency domain is construed as liquid material. Due to its flow across a surface it can be directly disturbed via multitouch or tangible interaction. With the aid of a fluid Simulation and a resynthesis afterwards, an audio signal is shaped. This work shows off a wide variety of creative manipulation techniques for the frequency domain.
- KonferenzbeitragBraindump – Konzept eines visuellen Systems für das Wissensmanagement am Beispiel der Verwaltung von Internetquellen(Workshop Gemeinschaften in Neuen Medien (GeNeMe) 2009, 2009) Brade, Marius; Lamack, Frank; Groh, Rainer
- WorkshopbeitragCreative Sound Modeling with Signed Distance Fields(Mensch und Computer 2022 - Workshopband, 2022) Mende, Tendsin; Engeln, Lars; McGinity, Matthew; Groh, RainerWavetable synthesisers often use 2D or 3D surface representations to visualise the internal table of values that produce the final audio waveform. This representation can be used to extend the expressiveness of synthesizers, by allowing more intuitive creation and manipulation of the 3D forms. In this work we explore the use of Signed Distance Fields (SDF) for representing and visualising 3D wavetables. SDF representations allow intuitive interactive sculpting and animation of 3D forms. We demonstrate different methods for transforming these forms into sound in real-time, by intersecting arbitrary 2D surfaces with the 3D forms and interpreting the results as sound, in both time and frequency domains. This extends the concept of wavetable synthesizers, and as SDFs lend themselves to real-time, immersive display and interaction through motion and gesture, the technique can be used to construct novel interfaces for musical expression.
- KonferenzbeitragDelviz: exploration of tagged information visualizations(INFORMATIK 2011 – Informatik schafft Communities, 2011) Keck, Mandy; Kammer, Dietrich; Iwan, René; Groh, Rainer; Taranko, SeverinClassification methods such as social tagging provide an easy way to annotate documents with metadata and describe them from various points of view. Frequently used visualization methods like tag clouds offer a limited access to the network of tags and fail at illustrating implicit relationships. Developing user interfaces which reveal these relationships and support the exploration of the resulting data structure is a considerable challenge. To address this problem, we present an interface concept, which illustrates the relationships between tags and supports different search strategies to explore a tagged item collection. The web application DelViz allows search and analysis in a collection of information visualizations.
- KonferenzbeitragDeveloping Multi-touch Software through Creative Destruction(Mensch & Computer 2010 Entertainment Interfaces Track, 2010) Franke, Ingmar S.; Kammer, Dietrich; Groh, Rainer; Happ, Simone; Steinhauf, Juliane; Schönefeld, FrankTangible and Gesture-Based Interfaces are made possible by hardware like the Microsoft® Surface Device. Despite the commitment of big business, the killer application is yet to be found. To address this challenge, we investigate the innovation process. Against this background, a workshop was set up and conducted. The clarification of focuses during brainstorming is achieved by introducing a triad of innovation, which revealed potentials for entertaining multi-touch applications. We respond to these potentials with the custom-made solutions realized during our workshop.
- WorkshopbeitragThe Earconizer - A Tool for constructing hierarchical Earcons(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Workshopband, 2019) Engeln, Lars; Hanke, Maximilian; Auerswald, Toni; Kallenbach, Felix; Groh, RainerEarcons have become an important part of the human-computer interaction. In addition to the visual presentation of a user interface, the use of the auditory channel enriches software-side entities with information. Additionally, earcons can significantly improve interaction and effectively communicate complex information. Often Earcons are created with the expertise of a sound designer. How can the creation be simplified so that earcons can be created and organized by ordinary users? This paper shows of a tool for creating earcons based on the hierarchical structure of compound earcons to positively enhance the user experience in an interactive environment.
- WorkshopbeitragEnabling Natural Cross-Device Interaction in Personal Desktop Settings(Mensch & Computer 2014 - Tagungsband, 2014) Brade, Marius; Buzin, Steffen; Groh, RainerThis work presents an easy to use approach for cross-device interaction using the scenario of having a laptop, desktop computer and mobile device co-located on a desk. A consistent user experience is created through enabling the use of any input device to interact with all co-located devices. The user can grab data from one device and move it to another one with the currently used input device. With this approach no manual setup of connections for data exchange is necessary. Instead this setup process is automated and invisible to the user.
