- ZeitschriftenartikelApplying machine intelligence in practice(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 43, No. 2, 2020) Humm, Bernhard; Bense, Hermann; Bock, Jürgen; Classen, Mario; Halvani, Oren; Herta, Christian; Hoppe, Thomas; Juwig, Oliver; Siegel, MelanieThe relevance of Machine Intelligence, a.k.a. Artificial Intelligence (AI), is undisputed at the present time. This is not only due to AI successes in research but, more prominently, its use in day-to-day practice. In 2014, we started a series of annual workshops at the Leibniz Zentrum für Informatik, Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany, initially focussing on Corporate Semantic Web and later widening the scope to Applied Machine Intelligence. This article presents a number of AI applications from various application domains, including medicine, industrial manufacturing and the insurance sector. Best practices, current trends, possibilities and limitations of new AI approaches for developing AI applications are also presented. Focus is put on the areas of natural language processing, ontologies and machine learning. The article concludes with a summary and outlook.

- ZeitschriftenartikelCurrent trends in applied machine intelligence(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 42, No. 1, 2019) Humm, Bernhard G.; Bense, Hermann; Classen, Mario; Geißler, Stefan; Hoppe, Thomas; Juwig, Oliver; Paschke, Adrian; Schäfermeier, Ralph; Siegel, Melanie; Weichhardt, Frauke; Wenning, RigoDas Gespräch führte Peter Pagel.
Summary A number of machine learning systems constructed for a broad range of learning problems are available. On the basis of a simple model this article summarizes some domain-independent criteria which can be used for the discription and choice of a learning system. The described criteria form the basis for deciding which system to apply on a given learning problem, on the other hand they give an impression of the characteristics of potential areas for machine learning methods.
- ZeitschriftenartikelMachine intelligence today: applications, methodology, and technology(Informatik Spektrum: Vol. 44, No. 2, 2021) Humm, Bernhard G.; Bense, Hermann; Fuchs, Michael; Gernhardt, Benjamin; Hemmje, Matthias; Hoppe, Thomas; Kaupp, Lukas; Lothary, Sebastian; Schäfer, Kai-Uwe; Thull, Bernhard; Vogel, Tobias; Wenning, RigoMachine intelligence, a.k.a. artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most prominent and relevant technologies today. It is in everyday use in the form of AI applications and has a strong impact on society. This article presents selected results of the 2020 Dagstuhl workshop on applied machine intelligence. Selected AI applications in various domains, namely culture, education, and industrial manufacturing are presented. Current trends, best practices, and recommendations regarding AI methodology and technology are explained. The focus is on ontologies (knowledge-based AI) and machine learning.
- KonferenzbeitragSimple Back-end Services for Corporate Semantic Web(INFORMATIK 2008. Beherrschbare Systeme - dank Informatik. Band 2, 2008) Tolksdorf, Robert; Oldakowski, Radoslaw; Hoppe, ThomasIn order to be adopted within corporate environments, Semantic Web applications must provide tangible short-/medium-term gains. Although corporate Semantic Web offers enterprises new possibilities for enhanced integration of heterogeneous business data, information discovery, and advanced automation of tasks, a cost-benefit analysis is in any case essential. In this paper, we argue that the main costs of ontology development and maintenance can be reduced by either licensing the use of that ontology by other organizations or by outsourcing those tasks to external providers. We also briefly point to the short-/medium-term benefits of corporate Semantic Web arising in the areas of data integration, semantic search, and personalization. This paper concludes with an example of a real-world company providing back- end services for corporate Semantic Web.
