The target of the strategy is to utilise advice and guidance, so as to motivate the residents, enterprises and the public sector to avoid waste production, so that less waste will be produced per resident and per workplace in year 2007 than in 2000. The main purpose is to produce material and methods to a web site and to market this site for all target groups. The main parts to include: 1. Waste prevention in companies, concentrating on co-operation networks to be formed for different sectors and on information acquired and distributed with them, on the use of the waste benchmarking system maintained by YTV. The best practice model for commercial sector is ready and located in the web site. 2. The waste prevention in public administration covers offices, acquisitions and social and health care. The process started by ecologising YTV’s own operations and the best practice model for offices is ready for use and located in the web site. 3. The information service and awareness education is directed towards households and schools. An awareness campaign is arranged for households in order to spread information on the reduction of waste and the web site where people can read more about the issue, is initiated. The Education materials for senior high school and for vocational institutes of technology are ready and located in the web site. Education materials will also be produced for primary school, preschool and other vocational institutions together with the authorities in order to promote waste prevention. The best practice model for schools is ready and in the website. We have investigated the use of the internet in waste counselling services in a yearly poll, and there has been an increase in the utilisation of the site from 12% (year 2000) to 54% (year 2005). The focus of the waste counselling has strongly shifted towards internet use.
- KonferenzbeitragThe Waste Prevention Kit for Education, Enterprises and Households (WastePrevKit)(Environmental Informatics and Systems Research, 2007) Hahtala, Riitta-Liisa; Huuhtanen, Silja; Kajaste, Seppo; Karhu, Elina; Kemppainen, Sari; Linsiö, Olli; Partti, MinnaThe Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV) is responsible for organising the waste management in residential building areas around the metropolitan area. In 2002 the board of YTV accepted the Waste prevention at source strategy until 2007. Therefore, a 5-year project was launched to realise this strategy (YTV 2002) and this project is funded by EU-LIFE -programme as a WastePrevKit project from 2005 to 2007. One of the main focus points of YTV is that by 2007 there will be less waste generated per inhabitant and workplace in the metropolitan area than in 2002. The waste prevention strategy consists of several subprojects. The most resources were devoted to the waste prevention at source and to linking the way of thinking materially effectively with the general education and vocational teaching. The models for smart ways of action drawn up in co-operation with educational institutions, enterprises and the public administration help for their part in reducing waste. The models are available for use in schools, shops, the building trade, offices and daycare centres. The waste benchmarking comparison service Petra is offered on YTV’s website and provides a good tool for monitoring the waste amounts generated in workplaces, in educational institutions, companies and public administration properties. There are various kinds of awareness raising campaigns which are targeted at households. The webpages of waste prevention at source www.ytv.fi/fiksu are the focal point of the strategy.
