- Konferenzbeitrag40 Gbps Access for Metro networks: Implications in terms of Sustainability and Innovation from an LCA Perspective(EnviroInfo & ICT4S, Conference Proceedings, 2015) Moghaddam, Reza Farrahi; Lemieux, Yves; Cheriet, MohamedIn this work, the implications of new technologies, more specifically the new optical FTTH technologies, are studied both from the functional and non-functional perspectives. In particular, some direct impacts are listed in the form of abandoning non-functional technologies, such as micro-registration, which would be implicitly required for having a functioning operation before arrival the new high-bandwidth access technologies. It is shown that such abandonment of non-functional best practices, which are mainly at the management level of ICT, immediately results in additional consumption and environmental footprint, and also there is a chance that some other new innovations might be missed. Therefore, unconstrained deployment of these access technologies is not aligned with a possible sustainable ICT picture, except if they are regulated. An approach to pricing the best practices, including both functional and non-functional technologies, is proposed in order to develop a regulation and policy framework for a sustainable broadband access

Scenarios and sustainability impacts of future ICT- societies(EnviroInfo & ICT4S, Conference Proceedings, 2015) Arushanyan, Yevgeniya; Ekener-Petersen, Elisabeth; Moberg, Åsa; Coroama, Vlad C.The rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT) has an influence on all societal sectors and can have both positive and negative consequences. To support ICT for sustainability (ICT4S), we need to learn when and how ICT can enable sustainable development. It is important to take into account all types of potential impacts environmental and social, direct and indirect. Looking at future ICT societies and their potential environmental and social implications is of special interest, as this can provide valuable knowledge for planning and policy-making today to enable ICT4S. A methodological framework for environmental and social assessment of future ICT societies with a consumption perspective was developed as a part of a joint project with researchers at KTH, ICT industry, municipality and county. The overall goal of the project was to develop five different future scenarios for Swedish ICT societies and to assess the risks and opportunities for environmental and social consequences in those scenarios. This paper presents the framework for environmental and social assessment of future scenarios and discusses the challenges experienced and lessons learned in the process of the framework development. The framework is aimed to deal with a broad and complex object and scope of assessment, the inherent uncertainty and data restrictions of future scenarios, and is applying qualitative analysis.

The tour operators work together with the German registered association M.E.E.R. e.V., which has set itself the target to evaluate the data scientifically. The aim of this thesis is to develop requirements on a process model for acquisition and analysis of this data material. The recording of the data is performed under difficult environmental conditions in the open sea. The data material should be stored persistently in a database that is accessible to both the employees (full access) and the tourists (limited access) on La Gomera, but on the other hand is also the basis for the scientific evaluation.With appropriate role and rights concepts it shall be prevented, that data is distributed too widely and the animals in the observation area are disturbed. Otherwise the requirements for simple access for all interested parties will be fulfilled. This paper proposes a web-access on the protected database and adds a data export for statistical analysis and a geographically based interface via an adequate layer structure in the GIS ArcMap.

- KonferenzbeitragA Strategy for Research on Governing the Anthropocene(EnviroInfo & ICT4S, Conference Proceedings, 2015) Leary, Rolfe A.; Johannsen, Vivian KvistWe present a hierarchical triangular framework to guide Anthropocene governing research. We lay out basic system levels and inter-relations. We include a human level, and address the different affects human activities are exerting on the other levels and interrelations. We point out that in more recent times; mans affects have extended more deeply into the lowest levels of earths systems, such as atmosphere and energy. Since our objectives are to discover, organize, deliver and evaluate new knowledge to better govern the Anthropocene, we look at simple cybernetic concepts of effector and feedback via controller. The chances of effective governance can be increased if the important source properties can be identified and their dynamics be used by the cybernetic controller to lower the level of complexity encountered. Research in the Anthropocene needs to ensure that research; from the experimental design, the data collection, the analyses and models; maintain an understanding of the triangle of systems, the interactions and the feedbacks to the systems. Only this way can research support the governance in the Anthropocene, based on environmental data, use of cutting edge research and understanding of the theory of systems.
- KonferenzbeitragA Survey on Application of Maturity Models for Smart Grid: Review of the State-of-the-Art(EnviroInfo & ICT4S, Conference Proceedings, 2015) Uslar, Mathias; Masurkewitz, JuliaMore and more different organizations are necessarily being involved in realizing the Smart Grid, but each of them has to fulfill a different role concerning the overall transition. Stakeholders from the transmission and from the distribution layer must be considered. Deriving from this, a large variety of topics and viewpoints are involved. The future Smart Grid architecture will thus be highly dynamic and complex. Guidance for the enterprises, regarding comparability and measurability of different activities and showing optimization potential for the Smart Grid, is urgently needed. A promising approach is to combine the approved method of the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) Use Case modeling method and a maturity model developed thereupon. A benefit for the development of the sustainable energy system of the future is, that the assessment of Smart Grid technology, concerning their interoperability and interaction, helps creating a common and organization crosscutting understanding. This paper gives an overall overview about maturity models and their benefits. Additionally, a classification scheme for maturity models is outlined in a first draft. This classification scheme should guide the selection of characteristics for developing a new maturity model.
- KonferenzbeitragA systematic review of environmentally conscious product design(EnviroInfo & ICT4S, Conference Proceedings, 2015) Li, Zhongkai; Gómez, Jorge Marx; Pehlken, AlexandraRecently environmentally conscious product design (ECPD) is highlighted by research community, because of the global conscious about low carbon emission and sustainable development. ECPD cares about the environmental, social and economic impacts of products during their life cycle phases, with the destination to achieve product life cycle design for sustainability. Furthermore, information and communication technologies are important for the implementation of computer-aided eco-design. The theories, methods, software tools about ECPD during 2005 to 2015 were reviewed in this work. Five most related aspects including product eco-design, design for disassembly (DFD), design for recycling (DFR), material selection (MS), and eco-design software tools were analyzed as related categories. Eco-impact assessment was found to be a pre-step in ECPD followed by product eco-innovation. DFD, DFR, and MS helped to improve the energy efficiency and eco-friendliness of products. Eco-design software tools are focusing on CAD-integration, web-based and knowledge base-based characteristics. More eco-design software tools will be developed in specific industries and to handling products with composite materials.
