    Evaluation Methods in Process-Aware Information Systems Research with a Perspective on Human Orientation

    Research on process-aware information systems (PAIS) has experienced a dramatic growth in recent years. Lately, a particular increase of empirical studies and focus on human oriented research questions could be observed, leading to an expansion of applied evaluation methods in PAIS research. At the same time, it can be observed that evaluation methods are not always applied in a systematic manner and related terminology is at times used in an ambiguous way. Hence, the paper aims at investigating evaluation methods that are typically employed in PAIS research with a special focus on human orientation. The applied methodology includes a literature review, an expert survey, and a focus group. The authors present their findings as a collection of typical evaluation methods and the related PAIS artifacts. They highlight which evaluation methods are currently used and which evaluation methods could be of interest for future PAIS research efforts.

    An Indexing Technique for Compliance Checking and Maintenance in Large Process and Rule Repositories

    Business process compliance has become a crucial challenge for enterprises throughout different domains. However, little thought has been spent on the management and verification of compliance rules in large process repositories so far, even though several case studies show, that the amount of business processes can reach from a small set to hundreds of business processes being subject to several hundreds of compliance rules. In this paper we present activity-oriented indexing techniques for efficient compliance checking which are particularly applicable in process and rule repositories where no a-priori knowledge, \eg based on policies, is available. Different applications beyond compliance checking are discussed such as process similarity notions or maintenance issues. The effects of applying indexing on the effort for compliance checks are discussed along with further aspects such as maintenance of process model and compliance rule repositories. Finally, a case study from the higher education domain in Austria is provided. The presented techniques constitute a first step towards a cost- and effort-aware management of large business process and compliance rule repositories.

    Timeline visualization for documenting process model change

    Organizations need to deal with change in order to remain competitive in a dynamic, global business world. When business processes need to be redesigned, it often remains unclear why a process evolved to its current form. Against this background, process change documentations can be helpful in order to illustrate and capture change information. The main purpose of this paper is to expand our understanding on how to visualize process change information and to explore the concept of timeline visualization for this application area. Using an expert inspection approach, we first identify shortcomings of existing timeline tools in meeting visualization requirements of business process change. We propose a conceptual design for change visualization using timelines that aims to support a contextual, temporal and comprehensive documentation of business process model changes.
