- KonferenzbeitragAutomation of Metadata Repository Development with XML Schema(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Kazakos, Wassilios; Valikov, Alexei; Schmidt, Andreas; Lehfeldt, RainerMetadata standards have been discussed since years in the environmental domain. Although the community has agreed that metadata are important for information finding, an globally accepted standard is still missing. Different requirements in diverse environmental application domains, countries and organisations have led to a huge variety on metadata vocabularies and technologies. Even projects using existing standards tend to adjust them slightly to their own requirements. A consequence is that new metadata repositories are developed or adapted to the new meta data element sets over and over again. In this paper we present a novel approach for the automation of metadata repository development. As input the system requires only an XML Schema describing the metadata vocabulary. Based on this schema the user interface, database schema and the search, retrieval and upload mechanism are generated during a batch process. The user interface layout can be further controlled by templates. The system is developed for the NOKIS project and evaluated by generating a metadata repository for an adjusted ISO 19115 metadata element set.
- KonferenzbeitragEditing ISO 19115 Compliant Metadata in EUROSION(The Information Society and Enlargement of the European Union, 2003) Kazakos, Wassilios; Akhounov, Alexei; Paoli, Heiko; Behrens, Sven; Niesing, Hugo; Lombardo, StephaneEUROSION is a project commissioned by the General Directorate Environment of the European Commission, which will result in policy recommendations on how to manage coastal erosion in Europe in the most sustainable way. In this paper we focus on the EUROSION Information System and new technological aspect in metadata based information systems. We leverage XML and adjacent technologies as well as International Standard ISO 19115 to point different issues, such as ease of development and maintenance, ergonomics and interoperability.
- KonferenzbeitragEinführung von SOS-Diensten für den Austausch®und die Darstellung numerischer Daten in PortalU(Integratives Datenmanagement – Beispiele aus der Umweltbeobachtung, 2009) Heidmann, Carsten; Kazakos, Wassilios; Klenke, Martin; Kunz, SiegbertIt was the aim of the project to define the possibilities for the usage of SOS services within the german environmental portal (PortalU®). The concept includes both the client side as the server side of the application. Including SOS services shall enable PortalU to access data from the german environmental administration and to provide a way to give access to a visualization across administrative and domain borders. The article reports on the initial requirements and the challenges occuring during the creation of the concept.
- KonferenzbeitragHIPPOLYTOS – Intuitive, übergreifende Recherche von Umwelt- und Geodaten mittels semantischen Technologien(Datenanforderungen und Informationsgewinnung zum Themenbereich Umwelt und Gesundheit, 2010) Lukács, Gergely; Kazakos, WassiliosData on the environment and geographic data are often stored in databases as structured data. The thematic coverage and the number of useful analysis and visualisations are usually very broad and therefore challenging for the user. These challenges are also in the focus of the INSPIRE-directive and the SEIS-initiative. The platform disy Cadenza allows to query, analyze and visualize environmental and geographic data. Its approach -- especially the general functionality and the configurability – allows implementing large scale scenarios economically. In this contribution, a current development of the platform is presented, a so called “single-field-search” on the basis of semantic technologies. The drastically simplified view of the user as well as the architectur-extension is presented. The work is partially financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research
- KonferenzbeitragIntegrierte Umweltdatenbanken: Geodatenhaltung, Architekturalternativen, Inhaltliche und technische Aspekte der Modellierung(Workshop des Arbeitskreises „Umweltdatenbanken / Umweltinformationssysteme“ der Fachgruppe „Informatik im Umweltschutz“, 2008) Lukács, Gergely; Kazakos, Wassilios; Kumer, DominikAbstract For many tasks regarding environmental protection the observation of rather complex situations is characteristic. As support for these tasks integrated environmental information systems are necessary. This paper gives an overview over some approaches which allow the development of either integrated environmental data bases or ones that can be extended and integrated at a later date. Firstly, the basic approach for integrated environmental databases is presented – the data warehouse (DW) with integrated management of geographical data – as well as alternatives: DWs with integrated application for data collection, with external management of geographical data, and with specific applications for mass data such as measured values. Secondly, some aspects of data modelling with respect to content and techniques are pointed out; in detail these are units, chemical substances, biological taxonomy, (aggregated) measured values, conventions for database schemata, object type catalogues and version management.
- KonferenzbeitragMetadata Management with ISO 19115 - The Key to Success of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI)(Managing Environmental Knowledge, 2006) Kazakos, WassiliosSpatial data infrastructures are among the much discussed subjects in the field of geodata management. At the forefront is the issue of providing and marketing geodata. The reasons are firstly the intention to lower the cost pressure on public geodata providers and secondly the anticipation of new markets by private-sector providers. We believe that in spite of a certain recent boom the role of metadata is still not sufficient discussed, although metadata are the essential basis and precondition of a functioning geodata market. Metadata are needed to systematically document geodata and are crucial for their integration in marketing processes and workflows. Actually without well documented metadata no SDI will ever work. In addition, with the availability of large metadata sets new methods can be applied and developed to measure quality of available geodata and new research can be conducted for advanced handling of geodata within everyday workflows and processes. With this paper we contribute to the current discussions about SDI and put the focus on Metadata Information Systems (MIS) within a SDI which we are convicted no SDI can do without.
