Considering psychological needs and values helps to address ethical aspects of interactive products and services by focusing on the users’ psychological well-being. The tutorial provides knowledge about psychological needs and values as well as the ethical implications for (user) experience design. After a theoretical introduction, the participants learn first how to make the rather abstract values and psychological needs tangible. Subsequently, the participants will apply the acquired insights to conduct ethical reflection in the context of a practical experience design process. The tutorial concludes with a summary of the newly gained knowledge and a discussion about the applied methods. The results are documented and subsequently made available.

We present exemplary empirical results from the application of the method concerning the value of privacy, revealing how needs and values can become tangible for user experience designers. Also, interdependencies between the value of privacy and psychological needs, and between the concepts of psychological needs and values in general, were identified by applying the guided experience design method. Learning about the connections of needs and values provide valuable insights for experience design, which are discussed in the paper and should be further explored.

This involves thorough analysis, open communication, and identifying potential adverse effects on users, the environment, and society. Addressing ethical aspects in digital products and services entails considering psychological needs and values. We’ve developed a workshop concept where designers and tech experts learn to make abstract values tangible, integrating ethical reflection into the design process. Implementation of the workshop shows that using appropriate methods enhances the solvability of ethical challenges. These challenges shouldn’t be viewed as obstacles but as opportunities for innovation. This position paper emphasises the importance of highlighting positive issues and suggests a shift in perspective, where ethical considerations are seen as catalysts for innovation rather than barriers to it.
- WorkshopbeitragTwo methods for Experience Design based on the Needs Empathy Map: Persona with Needs and Needs Persona(Mensch und Computer 2022 - Workshopband, 2022) Krueger, Anne ElisabethDesigning for psychological needs is an essential approach to designing for a positive experience in the context of interactive products and services. However, psychological needs are often perceived as rather abstract and there is a need for methods that support the design team to use them systematically in the experience-centered design process for creative ideation. In this paper, two methods are presented that support the designers in developing personas with the help of a specifically designed Needs Empathy Map, which systematically integrates the psychological needs model: The Persona with Needs and the Needs Persona methods. With the help of the Persona with Needs method, a hypothetical persona or a persona based on user research data is developed and the relevant psychological needs of the persona are derived based on this cognitive process. The Needs Persona method, on the other hand, starts from one or a set of psychological needs per se and makes it tangible and concrete with the help of the development of the persona on the empathy map. Both methods are suitable to sensitize for and for finding a common point of view in the design team on the perspective of potential users and psychological needs. At the same time, both methods can be used as a starting point for creative brainstorming in the context of experience-oriented design - either together or independently of each other.
