However, besides mastering technical challenges, achieving economic viability and broad market success has so far proven to be difficult for these initiatives. Based on a publicly funded research project, this study focuses on the business model design for an open digital ecosystem for privacy friendly and trustworthy intelligent assistants. We present how the agent-based modelling technique can be employed to evaluate how business models perform in various constellations of an open digital ecosystem. Thus, our work relates to the strategic choice of suitable business models as an important success factor for privacy and security-relevant technologies.
- KonferenzbeitragAnalyzing the state-of-the-art of scientific publications on identity management: is there an economic perspective?(Open Identity Summit 2014, 2014) Fähnrich, Nicolas; Kubach, MichaelAlthough sophisticated identity management (IdM) technologies have been developed for quite a while, they are not as broadly used as could be expected - in the corporate but especially in an end-user context. Some authors have argued that the reason for this lack of diffusion is not to be found in technological or privacy shortcomings. Rather, it is attributed to the disregard of an economic perspective in the research on IdM and the development of IdM-technologies. This argument, has so far not been scrutinized in a systematic way. Therefore, this article performs a literature analysis of scientific publications to analyze whether there is indeed a lack of publications on IdM that employ an economic perspective. The results of the analysis seem to support the argument that the economic perspective is neglected in the current research on IdM.

We present an approach incorporating different levels of assurance and trust domains in an eIDAS compliant way. This is illustrated through a use case with real-world relevance: the issuance and cross-border usage of the European Health Insurance Card.

Insbesondere Politik und Wirtschaft drängen auf die Entwicklung neuer Identitäts-Ökosysteme. Anstatt auf Defizite in Usability, Security und Datenschutz bestehender Lösungen zu fokussieren, nimmt diese Arbeit die für die Verbreitung von digitalen Identitätsmanagementlösungen ebenso bedeutsamen ökonomischen Aspekte in den Blick. Es wird analysiert, wie ID-Ökosysteme ökonomisch tragfähig aufgebaut und betrieben werden könnten, was entsprechend eine Zahlungs- oder Investitionsbereitschaft von irgendeiner Seite erfordert. Die Analyse wird über eine Betrachtung der Endnutzer-Anreize zur Adoption hinaus über die weiteren Ökosystemteilnehmer insbesondere auf die Serviceprovider erweitert, da bei diesen am Ehesten eine Zahlungsbereitschaft für ID-Services erwartbar ist. Somit stellt sich die Frage, ob und unter welchen Rahmenbedingungen ein Markt für digitale Identitäten entstehen kann und welche Einführungsstrategien – unter Beteiligung der öffentlichen Hand – bestehen. There is great dissatisfaction with existing digital identity solutions. Politics and business in particular are pushing for the development of new identity ecosystems. Instead of focusing on deficits in usability, security and data protection of existing solutions, this paper takes a look at the economic aspects that are just as important for the spread of digital identity management solutions. It analyzes how ID ecosystems could be set up and operated in an economically viable manner, which accordingly requires a willingness to pay or invest from some side. The analysis is extended beyond a consideration of end-user incentives for adoption to include the other ecosystem participants and, in particular, service providers, since these are the ones most likely to be willing to pay for ID services. This raises the question of whether and under what conditions a market for digital identities can emerge and what introduction strategies exist—with the involvement of the public sector.
- TextdokumentBusiness Models for Open Digital Ecosystems of Trustable Assistants(Open Identity Summit 2019, 2019) Mihale-Wilson, Cristina; Kubach, MichaelDigital ecosystems (DEs) are self-organizing, robust and scalable environments where various stakeholders interact to solve complex problems. The idea of building digital ecosystems is not new. Thus, we can currently draw on an extensive body of literature on the topic. Although academics have addressed the technical and architectural challenges of building digital ecosystems as well as their desirability regarding innovativeness and privacy, research on how to ensure the economic viability and thus sustainability of such DEs remains scarce. In this study, we address this void in the literature and focus on the economic challenges of building open DE. We discuss this topic in the context of an open DE for trustable assistants in the Internet of Things (IoT) and vet the research question: “which are the business models an open DE must support to be economically viable?" Based on a structured research analysis we identify seven business models,which are most likely essential to the economic success of the analysed DE.

This paper diverges from the traditional focus on the usability, security, and privacy shortcomings of current solutions, directing attention instead to the economic dimensions that are critical for the successful adoption of digital identity management (IdM) systems. The analysis extends beyond the incentives for end-user adoption, considering the roles, motivations, and ability of other key stakeholders to capture value through the ecosystem, particularly service providers, who are anticipated to be the primary financial contributors to ID services. This examination leads to the pivotal inquiry of whether a market for digital identities can materialize and what strategies for market entry could be viable, especially in scenarios involving public sector participation.

In this paper, we present a software-supported process model developed by us that helps SMEs to establish processes ensuring the rights of the data subjects and prepare the documentation that is necessary to comply with the GDPR. Three small case studies illustrate the work with the process model and lessons learned from these practical applications of our tool give further insights into the topic.
- TextdokumentThe ENTOURAGE Privacy and Security Reference Architecture for Internet of Things Ecosystems(Open Identity Summit 2019, 2019) Zibuschka, Jan; Horsch, Moritz; Kubach, MichaelThe Internet of Things (IoT), with its ubiquitous sensors and actuators, enables highly useful novel use cases, notably in the field of digital assistance. It also raises unprecedented privacy and security issues. This contribution presents a reference architecture for an ecosystem of digital assistants with minimal barriers of entry, that aims to be both secure and privacy-respecting. We present concise definitions, requirements, and a layered architectural structure for IoT assistants. Moreover, we introduce privacy and security assistants building on privacy patterns such as privacy dashboard, privacy mode and security and privacy policies and interface.

It aims to design an architecture, which is practically implementable in the highly collaborative environment that exists in the automotive industry. The paper sketches the conducted marked research to obtain such a model and presents an architecture design based on a trusted intermediary.

We describe the implementation of this model using the TRAIN trust infrastructure and how wallets might interoperate with verifiers using different trust infrastructures. This leverages the OIDC GAIN proof of concept network currently being built using the draft OIDC Federation specification. We briefly describe the experiments that we have undertaken to date and the research that is still outstanding
