- KonferenzbeitragIntroduction to the workshop: diversity in computer science: tool or target?(INFORMATIK 2011 – Informatik schafft Communities, 2011) Leicht-Scholten, Carmen; Schraudner, MartinaThe contribution illustrates in what way research and development processes can benefit from the integration of diversity perspectives by showing several examples from computer science and other closely related disciplines. Building on this a possible contribution of diversity perspectives for computer science will be presented. Especially in applied computer science, which is supposed to support human activities by designing technical artifacts, the integration of the perspectives of diverse users is an important criterion for the success of the systems being developed. How can diversity perspectives be integrated in other fields of computer science? And how can computer science contribute to the current societal discourse?
- KonferenzbeitragModelling Human Factors in Cyber Physical Production Systems by the Integration of Human Digital Shadows(Modellierung 2022 Satellite Events, 2022) Mertens, Alexander; Brauner, Philipp; Baier, Ralph; Brillowski, Florian; Dammers, Hannah; Van Dyck, Marc; Kong, Iris; Königs, Peter; Kordtomeikel, Frauke; Liehner, Gian Luca; Pütz, Sebastian; Rodemann, Niklas; Schaar, Anne Kathrin; Steuer-Dankert, Linda; Vervier, Luisa; Wlecke, Shari; Gries, Thomas; Leicht-Scholten, Carmen; Nagel, Saskia K.; Piller, Frank T.; Schuh, Günther; Ziefle, Martina; Nitsch, VerenaThe future of industrial manufacturing and production will increasingly manifest in the form of cyber-physical production systems. Here, Digital Shadows will act as mediators between the physical and digital world to model and operationalize the interactions and relationships between different entities in production systems. Until now, the associated concepts have been primarily pursued and implemented from a technocentric perspective, in which human actors play a subordinate role, if they are considered at all. This paper outlines an anthropocentric approach that explicitly considers the characteristics, behavior, and traits and states of human actors in socio-technical production systems. For this purpose, we discuss the potentials and the expected challenges and threats of creating and using Human Digital Shadows in production.
- KonferenzbeitragPreliminary findings of a gender and diversity screening at a technical university: impressions of the project “IGaDtools4MINT”(INFORMATIK 2011 – Informatik schafft Communities, 2011) Apel, Rebecca; Berg, Tobias; Holz, Jan; Brauner, Philipp; Schroeder, Ulrik; Wolffram, Andrea; Leicht-Scholten, CarmenIn the paper at hand the project design of “IGaDtools4MINT”, a research project aiming to promote gender and diversity aspects as well as an opening of the faculty culture of computer science, is introduced. A first approximation on the reasons why women tend to study computer science and other MINT/STEM-subjects far less often than men will be given. Moreover, results of an initial survey of first semester students of computer science and impressions of a qualitative participant observation of different introductory courses of computer science at RWTH Aachen University are interpreted and discussed. The results of the evaluation allow for the assumption that efforts for the creation of a gender and diversity friendly environment which is a basic factor for the attraction of non-traditional, diverse students are visible but that these efforts to a large extent lack a coherent strategy and gender and diversity sensitivity to contribute to a sustainable structural and cultural change process within the department of computer science.
