- KonferenzbeitragAn Information System for Accounting Fate of Man-induced Substances and Determining their Effects on Aquatic Organisms and Ecosystem Functions(Informatics for Environmental Protection - Networking Environmental Information, 2005) Meinecke, Stefan; Feibicke, Michael; Haase, Michael; Freudig, Jürgen; Lukacs, Gergely; Hofmann, Claus
- KonferenzbeitragCustomized Life Cycle Costs of Consumer Goods via Mobile Phones(Managing Environmental Knowledge, 2006) Lukacs, Gergely; Takacs, GyörgyThis paper presents an information system that provides support for consumer decisions through calculating life cycle costs. The information system is accessed via a mobile phone that recognizes the product through taking a picture of its bar code. The first part of the paper explains the importance of providing such information for consumers and points out the advantages of providing the information electronically. The second part gives a brief description of the architecture and of the technologies used. Through this approach of providing information electronically, life cycle costs and sophisticated product evaluations can reach a very large number of consumers in a very wide range of decision making situations, thus potentially significantly influencing the market through consumers’ behaviour.
- KonferenzbeitragDataWeb for Integrated Environmental Information Systems – An Abstract View on disy Cadenza(Environmental Informatics and Industrial Ecology, 2008) Lukacs, GergelyThis paper describes the DataWeb, a software platform used to query and analyse (integrated) environmental databases. The requirements and the solutions are similar in many respects to those of the World-Wide Web – with the important difference that it queries, analyses and visualizes structured data stored in environmental databases, as opposed to documents available on the World-Wide Web. The approach is not a theoretical one: the requirements and the solutions result from over a decade of R&D effort in environmental information systems and many of the ideas are already implemented in a platform called disy Cadenza, used in numerous environmental information systems.
- KonferenzbeitragInformation System for Implementing the European Directive on Environmental Noise in Bavaria(Managing Environmental Knowledge, 2006) Briesen, Marcus; Lukacs, Gergely; Hofmann, Claus; Leibold-Strobl, Thomas; Brand, JürgenThe European directive relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise prescribes an integrative, comprehensive approach to assessing and reducing environmental noise and its harmful effects. In this paper, the Bavarian implementation of the directive is described. The Bavarian State Agency for Environment Protection is responsible for the implementation of the law. It is setting up a central database, integrating related source data and the result of acoustic calculations and numeric models. The contents, the technical solutions of the data management, the applications and the evaluation scenarios are presented.
- KonferenzbeitragPotential in Information and Communication Technologies for Supporting Sustainable Consumption(Environmental Informatics and Industrial Ecology, 2008) Lukacs, GergelySustainable consumption is becoming a central issue in environmental protection. Discussions are being held and new ideas generated on the main areas of consumption (mobility, food, consumer goods, buildings) and how these can be made more sustainable., The European Union is about to launch an Action Plan to further these goals. This paper gives a comprehensive overview on how ICT, more specifically information systems can support sustainable consumption for environmentally conscious consumers or for those wanting to economise in the medium and long term. The paper is structured according to the main areas of consumption. It covers both existing systems relevant from this point of view and new ideas and general considerations about the potential contribution of information systems to sustainable consumption.
- KonferenzbeitragReporting Environmental Information - Best Practice and 15 years of experience in Germany(Proceedings of the European conference TOWARDS eENVIRONMENT, 2009) Kazakos, Wassilios; Lukacs, Gergely
- KonferenzbeitragSemantic Search over Structured Environmental and Geographic Data(Integration of Environmental Information in Europe, 2010) Lukacs, Gergely; Kazakos, WassiliosIn this paper we describe a single-field intelligent search approach to complex structured environmental and spatial data. A robust architecture is presented, supporting the topical, spatial and temporal dimensions of the single-field search interface. The major innovation lays in an intelligent search expansion based on semantic knowledge in the field of the domain. There is a major difference in comparison to single-field search engines supporting un- or semistructured document data like Lucene, Google etc. is that the system allows for dynamic access to structured spatial and non-spatial data retrieved dynamically from a database based on modern semantic technologies developed under the THESEUS research program of the German Ministry BMWi. The paper is structured as follows. First we give an introduction and some background information about the systems and the domain we are addressing as well as about the research programm. In order to describe the advantages and differences for the user, we provide an user’s perspective on the system we envision. The main part of the paper provides an architecture including the main components and the approach followed to achieve our goals.
- KonferenzbeitragWater Management Information System of the State of Lower Saxony(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Lukacs, Gergely; Otterstätter, Arnd; Claus, Hofmann; Lienau, Gerhild; Neumann, Hans; Schuchardt, Volker; Weber, DirkLower Saxony is setting up a state-wide information system for water management (FIS-W) ― especially with regard to the European Community’s Water Framework Directive. As part of the FIS-W, a data warehouse is under development, into which data from specialized, water-related information systems will be transferred continuously. The data warehouse shall cover all information relevant to comprehensive water management. It is accessible to different authorities via the state’s Intranet. This contribution describes organizational issues and technical concepts of the data warehouse.
