- KonferenzbeitragA System for Data Collection of Environmental Information(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Qazzaz, Bahjat; Abdalhaq, Baker; Tamajon, Daniel; Rexachs, Dolores I.; Luque, EmilioThe changes in the nature of forest ecosystems require a continuous monitoring and management in order to face the problems that may appear due to these changes. The main goal of FOREMMS, (EU project), is to develop and demonstrate an advanced forest environmental and management prototype system. In the framework of FOREMMS we are describing the design and implementation of an autonomous system, based on a handheld PC as the field device, for the acquisition of manual measures in the field about the environmental parameters of forests. The application personalizes the handheld PC as a system for data collection so that, the user can introduce all the manual measurements field data easily, send them to the lab to be completed and later on to database. This system can be useful also for other data gathering applications such as fire prevention monitoring systems and it can be used for calibration of remote sensing systems.
- KonferenzbeitragComputational method for prediction enhancement of a river flood simulation(Proceedings of the 28th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2014) Gaudiani, Adriana; Luque, Emilio; Garcia, Pablo; Re, Mariano; Naiouf, Marcelo; De Giusti, ArmandoThe occurrence of flood events has become more frequent in many parts of the world over the past 30 years and, consequently, more people are exposed to flood damages. Modeling and computational simulation provide powerful tools which enable us to forecast, in order to reduce flood damages. This work is oriented to address input parameter uncertainty toward providing a methodology to tune the flood simulator and so achieve lower errors between simulated and observed results. Even a much reduced parameter set is considered to run the flood simulator, the search space is large. The results obtained by using a parametric simulation heuristic and a clustering technique are promising and a reduction of the search space was achieved, consequently we could reduce the computational cost of the search for the best scenario and the optimization scheme implemented enables us to get a better understanding of the problem.
- KonferenzbeitragParallel Approach to the Simulation Of Forest Fire Propagation(Umweltinformatik ’99 - Umweltinformatik zwischen Theorie und Industrieanwendung, 1999) Jorba, Josep; Margalef, Tomas; Luque, Emilio; da Silva André, Jorge Campos; Viegas, Domingos XavierForest fire is one of the most critical environmental risks in all the Mediterranean Countries. The fight against these emergencies requires useful tools to predict the propagation and behaviour of forest fire in order to take the best decisions. It means it is necessary to know the propagation and behaviour of the forest fire in advance to act in the best possible way. However, this is a complex problem that requires high performance computing capabilities to provide accurate results faster than real time. High performance computing, mainly parallel and distributed systems, provide the computing capabilities to solve this problem in a reasonable time. In this work we present a parallel approach to simulate the forest fire propagation.
