- Konferenzbeitrag3D Visualisation of continuous, multidimensional, meteorological Satellite Data(Proceedings of the 28th Conference on Environmental Informatics - Informatics for Environmental Protection, Sustainable Development and Risk Management, 2014) Lutz, RichardTen years of earth observation by the MIPAS instrument aboard the European environmental satellite Envisat [1] led to a considerable amount of measurement and processed data, which has to be managed and visualized by powerful and flexible software tools. This paper gives an overview about new concepts, tools and methods for the 3D visualisation of continuous, multidimensional, meteorological Satellite Data, which are realised with WISA (Wissenschaftliches Informationssystem für die Atmosphärenforschung – Scientific Information System for atmospheric Research). A major goal of the visualisation is the recognition of correlations between different trace gas concentrations (e.g. ozone, chlorine nitrate, chlorofluorocarbons, etc.) and the visualisation of trace gas distributions where the main focus was laid on the polar areas.
- KonferenzbeitragA Toolbox for Building up Process-based, Macro-economic Material Flow Models(EnviroInfo Dessau 2012, Part 2: Open Data and Industrial Ecological Management, 2012) Weidemann, Rainer; Poganietz, Witold-Roger; Lutz, Richard; Grieß, ChristinaUsing the example of CarboMoG, the Carbon Flow Model of Germany, structures and processes for process-based, macro-economic material flow models were analyzed. The aim is to create a toolbox, which can be used to assemble models of this kind from building blocks, to parameterize and calculate a model, and then to use the model for analysis tasks. It was investigated whether and how toolkits existing in the fields of material flow analysis and life cycle assessment could also be used for process-based, macro-economic material flow models. Unfortunately, it was found that no product could be used without massive adaptations. Thus, the development of an own toolbox was initialized.
- KonferenzbeitragErfahrungen mit MongoDB bei der Verwaltung meteorologischer Massendaten(Umweltinformationssysteme. Big Data – Open Data – Data Variety, 2015) Lutz, RichardThe remote sensing of atmospheric trace gases investigates dynamic, microphysical and chemical processes in the Earth?s atmosphere, with the goal to understand, quantify and predict its natural variability and long-term changes. Accurate measurements of atmospheric trace gases from various observational platforms (ground-based stations, air craft, balloons, satellites) provide the data that are required for the modelling of atmospheric processes. The instrument GLORIA (Gimballed Limb Observer for Radiance Imaging of the Atmosphere), developed by KIT/IMK and FZ Jülich, an Infrared Spectrometer, which measures atmospheric emissions, was engaged in several measurement campaigns on board of HALO (High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft) and provided a large amount of data, which has to be managed efficiently for processing and visualisation. This paper describes the system background and the use of MongoDB for the provision of measured and processed mass data.
- KonferenzbeitragInformation System on Literature in the Field of ICT for Environmental Sustainability(Integration of Environmental Information in Europe, 2010) Lutz, Richard; Geiger, Werner; Schmitt, Christian; Schreiber, MartinThe project ICT-ENSURE aims at building a pan-European Research Area in the field of ICT for environmental sustainability. For building up and establishing a research area, the access to the hitherto existing scientific literature in the field is of major importance. Therefore, a literature information system for the field of ICT for environmental sustainability has been developed within ICT-ENSURE. The system developed contains information on the papers of 14 EnviroInfo conferences and of 4 further conferences and workshops in the field under consideration. All in all, it comprises the metadata of about 1600 and the full texts of about 1000 articles. The information system offers various search and navigation paths to this content, including full text search, attribute search and navigation in the hierarchical structure of the conference proceedings. It is available in the Web at http://lit.ict-ensure.eu with free online access. This paper describes the concept, structure and functionality of the information system including the interfaces to other literature portals. It deals with the contents and user interface of the system and gives an outlook on the future of the information service.

- KonferenzbeitragNational European Research Programmes in the Field of ICT for Environmental Sustainability(Integration of Environmental Information in Europe, 2010) Schneider, Heinrich; Geiger, Werner; Lutz, RichardAn important goal of the European Union is the creation of a united European Research Area. To meet this goal, the ICT-ENSURE project was initiated. ICT-ENSURE (ICT Environmental Sustainability Research, http://www.ictensure.eu) aims at supporting the European Research Area in the field of ICT for environmental sustainability. The project was funded within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union from May 2008 to April 2010. A central task of the ICT-ENSURE project was the acquisition and compilation of metadata about national European research programmes and projects in the mentioned field and the provision of a public access to these data. For this, experts of numerous EU Member States have investigated national and regional research programmes and projects, and a web-based information system was developed (http://is.ict-ensure.eu) to supply the data. The compiled metadata were the basis for an EU-wide survey. The goal of this survey was to provide scientists and policy makers with an overview of and meta information on national research activities. In some countries the survey was supplemented by interviews to complete and verify the survey results and analyses. This paper gives a short overview of the objectives of the ICT-ENSURE project. Challenges in information retrieval for such a pan-European information system are considered and the procedure chosen for the investigation of metadata on national research programmes are dealt with. Furthermore, relevant results of the analysis of the information collected are dealt with.
The European Space Agency (ESA) is preparing the start of the environmental satellite ENVISAT-1, that will be launched in 1999. This satellite is equipped with a set of different instruments for environmental monitoring from space. One of these instruments is the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS). The distribution of the concentrations of atmospheric trace gases are calculated from the data generated from this instrument. A Scientific Information System for the Atmospheric Research (WISA) is developed for the scientific processing of the measurement and computation results.
- KonferenzbeitragTechnisches Konzept der Forschungsinformationssysteme des EU-Projekts ICT-ENSURE(Datenanforderungen und Informationsgewinnung zum Themenbereich Umwelt und Gesundheit, 2010) Lutz, Richard; Schmitt, Christian; Geiger, WernerMit dem EU-Projekt ICT-ENSURE (European Information and Communication Technologies - Environmental Sustainability Research) soll die Etablierung einer europaweiten Forschungslandschaft im Bereich ICT für Nachhaltigkeit in der Umwelt unterstützt werden (Tochtermann et al., 2008).
