- KonferenzbeitragMeeting User Needs in the Development of the EUROCLIM Climate Information System(The Information Society and Enlargement of the European Union, 2003) Maguire, Martin C.For a system to be successful, it is necessary to understand what the future users will need and want from it. The EU EUROCLIM project, led by the Norwegian Computing Centre (Norsk Regnescentral) in Oslo, has the aim of developing an advanced climate monitoring and prediction system for Europe (http://euroclim.nr.no). The role of Loughborough University on the project is to establish user needs, to assist in the development of the user interface to the system and to lead system evaluation. This paper describes the activity of user needs specification for EUROCLIM and the role of a user interface simulation to refine those needs and guide the system development team.
- KonferenzbeitragUser Requirements and Prototyping for Forest and Climate Change Information Systems(Environmental Communication in the Information Society - Proceedings of the 16th Conference, 2002) Maguire, Martin C.This paper reports on Human Factors activities carried out in the development of two environmental information systems being developed as projects within the EC IST programme. The FOREMMS project is concerned with providing status information and predictions about forest status and health across Europe. The EUROCLIM project is to provide information about changes in the Artic region (e.g. glaciers, snow cover, sea ice) to form a historical database and to feed into a model to help predict climate change in Europe. User information and presentation requirements of scientific users were defined for both systems. It is also intended that both systems will provide information to public users to make them aware about environmental issues and trends in an objective way. This paper discusses the processes involved in making these systems effective for the end-users.
