- KonferenzbeitragGrundlegende Anforderungen an das Datenmanagement in interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekten(Land- und Ernährungswirtschaft im Wandel – Aufgaben und Herausforderungen für die Agrar und Umweltinformatik, 2006) Mückschel, Claus; Schachtel, Gabriel A.; Wehrum, Alexander; Nieschulze, Jens; Köhler WolfgangSet-up and maintenance of central data management systems in interdisciplinary research projects face some typical problems and challenges. Data management should be regarded as an integral and indispensable constituent of any multi-group project and must therefore be included from early on into the conceptual planning. Continuous and close communication between the system developing team and all other subprojects about the needs and options of either side facilitates an efficient and smooth data management, e.g. the collection, storage, and access of project data. The userś integration into involvement in the processes of system development supports the implementation of intuitively understandable interfaces and promotes system acceptance.
- KonferenzbeitragTowards an integrated biodiversity and ecological research data management and archiving platform: the German federation for the curation of biological data (GFBio)(Informatik 2014, 2014) Diepenbroek, Michael; Glöckner, Frank Oliver; Grobe, Peter; Güntsch, Anton; Huber, Robert; König-Ries, Birgitta; Kostadinov, Ivaylo; Nieschulze, Jens; Seeger, Bernhard; Tolksdorf, Robert; Triebel, DagmarBiodiversity research brings together the many facets of biological environmental research. Its data management is characterized by integration and is particularly challenging due to the large volume and tremendous heterogeneity of the data. At the same time, it is particularly important: A lot of the data is not reproducible. Once it is gone, potential knowledge that could have been gained from it is irrevocably lost. In this paper, we describe challenges to biodiversity data management along the data life cycle and sketch the solution that is currently being developed within the GFBio project, a collaborative effort of nineteen German research institutions ranging from museums and archives to biodiversity researchers and computer scientists.
- KonferenzbeitragA web service based approach for integrating statistics tools into an information system for experiment data(Informatik 2009 – Im Focus das Leben, 2009) Heimann, Dennis; Nieschulze, Jens
- KonferenzbeitragWeb-basiertes GIS als Informationssystem interdisziplinerer Forschungsprojekte(Integration und Datensicherheit – Anforderungen, Konflikte und Perspektiven, Referate der 25. GIL Jahrestagung, 2004) Mückschel, Claus; Schachtel, Gabriel A.; Nieschulze, Jens; Köhler, WolfgangInterdisciplinary research projects with environmental focus need an information technology which is capable of describing the flow of minerals and other substances with respect to space and time. Especially time dependencies are of great interest in many environmental studies, where changes can often be shown only via trend analysis of time series. A suitable technology must also supply methods for processing of information in order to present project data and project results in graphically as well as in numerically meaningful ways. Geographical In- formation Systems (GIS) are the tools that meet these requirements best. In the DFG-funded interdisciplinary project SFB 299 (Land use concepts for peripheral regions) we implemented successfully such web-based GIS (also known by the terms “Internet GIS”, “Online GIS”, “Distributed GIS” or “Internet Mapping”). Especially Open GIS standards such as “Web Map Service” (WMS) or “Web Feature Service” (WFS) are used in the development of Web GIS techniques. They facilitate the finding of highly portable solutions which are mainly based on open source technologies. In the project several web-GIS systems are in development currently, ranging from tools for the simple depiction of maps to interactive connection of SFB data with personal data of local users.
