- KonferenzbeitragLCA of ICT application for dematerialization in Italian Public Administration(Innovations in Sharing Environmental Observations and Information, 2011) Mirabella, Nadia; Rigamonti, Lucia; Scalbi, SimonaCurrently in Italy the whole area of document management is accomplished through paper, with some practices managed by manual storing and others by digital repository. The volume of paper and documents stored has high management costs both in time, and in monetary terms. The case study shows an example of application of life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to the field of ICT (Information and Communication Technology), analyzing a case of dematerialization in Italian Public Administration. The Municipality of Rimini was taken as an example, considering some of the procedures existing between the City itself and the companies operating in tourism sector. The objective of this study is to apply the life-cycle approach to the two proposed scenarios (traditional and innovative) assessing the environmental impact and providing an opportunity to make a comparative analysis. The results show that the innovative scenario creates lower environmental impacts. The improvements range from a maximum value of 99.7% for the category Land occupation to a minimum value of 79.2% for the category Mineral extraction. In the traditional scenario transports confirm to be the main source of potential impacts for all categories, from a peak of 96.4% for the category Terrestrial ecotoxicity to a minimum of 47.7% for the Land occupation. Hence, we can conclude that the implementation of the new ICT system will have a positive effect from the environmental point of view.
