Rodriguez; Andres-Urrutia, AlfonsoGUAD 2D is a finite volume based two-dimensional model for the numerical simulation and analysis of flood waves caused by reasons such as extreme rainfall, gradual or sudden dam break or the release of a big water tank retaining wall. GUAD 2D allows to obtain real results in, critical, subcritical or mixed flow situations over irregular topography. GUAD 2D makes possible different initial conditions, like starting from dry or wet situations, or from the results obtained in a previous simulation.
- KonferenzbeitragA Method for High Precision Coordinate Transformation in Environmental GIS Applications(Environmental Informatics and Systems Research, 2007) Ruzic, Ivica; Pecar-Ilic, JadrankaDevelopment of a method for coordinate system transformations, which can be used within GIS applications for envi- ronmental information management, is described. Transformation of geographic (in degrees) into geodetic (in m) coor- dinates was investigated using the old Yugoslav coordinate system (still in use in the newly established states of Slo- venia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia) as source data, with precision of cm. To simplify the transformation procedure, the general polynomial coordinate transformation was used, organized in several steps. First, an equation of the third order for interpolation of northing coordinates along a central meridian, as a function of latitude, was developed using a central difference scheme. Using the results obtained in such a way equa- tions of second and fourth orders were developed for calculation of the increase in northing and shifts of easting from false easting, as a function of longitude (for a distance of 2o from the central meridian) along the corresponding paral- lel. Interpolation by 1o resulted in errors up to 5 cm, while interpolation by 30' resulted in errors below 1 cm, which corresponds to the precision of original source data. Interpolation by 15' or less cannot further increase the accuracy. Quadratic terms (about 485m/o) are dominant in equations for the increase in northing and linear terms (about 80000m/o) are dominant in those for the shift in easting, while other terms are in the range of centimetres or less.

Experiment has been carried since March 2006 and whereas this period of time changes in algae sizes were observed. The results of particle size analysis and preliminary assessment of this test is presented in this work.
- KonferenzbeitragA Modelling and Mapping System for Impact Assessment of Atmospheric Sulphur and Nitrogen Deposition on Forest Ecosystems(Environmental Informatics and Systems Research, 2007) Mill, Wojciech; Schlama, AdrianA mass balance model to calculate critical loads of airborne acidity to forest ecosystems has been computerized. The SONOX software developed at the Institute of Environmental Protection replicates the sequence of events on the path from sulfur and nitrogen emission through their deposition and next overlaying it on critical loads values to identify the extent and areas of critical loads exceedance. To support decision making a converse direction is offered to assess the necessary emission reductions to meet assumed environmental goals by eliminating or suitably abating the critical loads exceedance. This software originally developed and applied to support the Polish contribution to the negotiations of the Oslo and Gothenburg Protocols of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution was after that used to assess the capacity of achieving the interim environmental quality targets of the NEC Directive in Poland, to support the development of air protection programs for administrative units exposed to transboundary fluxes and other decision making purposes.
- KonferenzbeitragA Multi-layered System Architecture for Environmental Monitoring Data Management – Taiwan’s Experience(Environmental Informatics and Systems Research, 2007) Chu, Yu-ChiThis paper presents a comprehensive system architecture which adopts a multi-layer approach and is based on the web-based platform for environmental monitoring data management, ranging from data collection to applications. This architecture is designed in a modular and flexible fashion. As an example of practicality, the second phase Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (TAQMN-2) has been implemented using the proposed system architecture to justify its feasibility. The overall structure of TAQMN-2 is described, and two major subsystems, data collection manager (DCM) and data access manager (DAM), are illustrated in detail. Taiwan EPA benefited greatly from the results of TAQMN-2, not only in terms of streamlining the air quality data management but also in upgrading work performance on improving the air quality in Taiwan. The usage of proposed architecture is not restricted to air quality data management; it is also suitable for other domains of environmental science with limited tuning, adjustments, or augmentation.
- KonferenzbeitragA Proposal for a Thesaurus for Web Services in Solar Radiation(Environmental Informatics and Systems Research, 2007) Gschwind, Benoit; Menard, Lionel; Ranchin, Thierry; Wald, Lucien; Stackhouse, PaulMetadata are necessary to discover, describe and exchange any type of information, resource and service at a large scale. A significant amount of effort has been made in the field of geography and environment to establish standards. Efforts still remain to address more specific domains such as renewable energies. This communication focuses on solar energy and more specifically on aspects in solar radiation that relate to geography and meteorology. A thesaurus in solar radiation is proposed for the keys elements in solar radiation namely time, space and radiation types. The importance of time-series in solar radiation is outlined and attributes of the key elements are discussed. An XML schema for encoding metadata is proposed. The exploitation of such a schema in web services is discussed. This proposal is a first attempt at establishing a thesaurus for describing data and applications in solar radiation.
- KonferenzbeitragA Software Architecture for the Cooperation Project HADU: (Hamburg’s Dynamical Geological Underground)(Environmental Informatics and Systems Research, 2007) Wittmann, JochenThe cooperation project on Hamburgs dynamical geological underground (HADU) intends an integrative view on recent geological subsurface processes in the region of the City of Hamburg. Measurement data resulting from geological georadar methods, geophysical ambient vibrations techniques, and conventional well databases shall be combined to a 3D-underground model. From the geological point of view, such a model will help to understand the georisks caused by the salt diapirs in the underground. The computer science part of the project concentrates on a common data handling, the visualization of the geological data, and the integration of Fuzzy-methods to handle incomplete and uncertain data. In this context, this paper presents the concept for the over-all architecture of the software system developed for the use in the HADU project. Main task for the developers was to bridge the gap between the demands of the projects partners concerning the integration of already existing, highly proprietary software modules on the one hand, and to offer an integrated data handling and analysis in regard to data consistency and reproducibility of the results on the other hand. Focused on this aspect, the paper defines the HADU software architecture and discusses its adequacy and practicability within the project contexts.

The study is based on Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) and Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) techniques applied to a 1-D river flow model. The locally conditioned GSA is used to estimate the influence of each conservation action scenario.
- KonferenzbeitragA Technical and Distributed Management Basis for an Environmentally Clean and Sustainable Energy Supply(Environmental Informatics and Systems Research, 2007) Wedde, Horst F.; Lehnhoff, Sebastian; Handschin, Edmund; Krause, OlanRising market prices for energy, an apparent future shortage in fossil fuels, and alarming reports on pollution through CO2 are causing a world-wide trend towards renewable and ecologically clean forms of energy. We report about ongoing work in the R&D project DEZENT establishing renewable electric energy supply and eventually replacing fossil energy sources. Producers are at the same time also consumers. Their production and consumption are largely unpredictable. With our combined expertise in Real-Time systems and Electric Power Distribution we developed price negotiations which are pursued by consumer/ producer agents on a P2P basis and are governed by tough end-to-end deadlines (< 0.5 sec) dictated by EE constraints. The strategies used for periods of 0.5 sec are designed for fast convergence while we may at the same time assume a constant demand/ supply situation. Malicious users will not succeed, and customers pay considerable less than under conventional management policies or structures. In this paper we allow the negotiation strategies themselves to be adaptive across periods thus achieving a most flexible bargaining for each individual customer involved. For this purpose we have defined distributed learning algorithms derived from Reinforcement Learning. While maintaining all benefits from the earlier stage of development we demonstrate that we obtain a much better performance across periods than the initial static algorithms. To our knowledge we have presented and investigated the first distributed learning algorithm in the area of Adaptive Real-time Systems. Since the electric distribution management can be equally finalized within each period we have laid the ground for a thorough provision with sustainable and clean electric energy.
