- KonferenzbeitragAdapting RDMO for the Efficient Management of Educational Research Data(21. Fachtagung Bildungstechnologien (DELFI), 2023) Kiesler, Natalie; Schiffner, Daniel; Nieder-Vahrenholz, AxelResearch data management has become a core element of research projects in educational technology research. Tools like the Research Data Management Organiser (RDMO) offer support to researchers by gathering metadata of (planned) projects, studies and their output in a structured manner. It further facilitates machine actionable components so that metadata and information can be exchanged by connecting metadata, repositories, and institutions. In this demo, we present a use case of RDMO at a German research data center. Therein, we adapt RDMO’s export plugin so that it generates JSON in the data structure of the German Network of Educational Research Data, and thus allows the export of metadata from RDMO to research data centers. This proof-of-concept thus presents an application scenario of RDMO, and how it can contribute to an improved data management process in educational technology research.
- KonferenzbeitragGet your back straight! Learn Pilates with the Pilates Correction App(DELFI 2021, 2021) Meik, Anna; Schneider, Jan; Schiffner, DanielCurrently, a vast number of the population faces several barriers like the lack of motivation and guidance that impede them from practicing physical activities. Thus, we developed the Pilates Correction Game (PCG), a gamified application designed to support learners with the practice of Pilates. The PCG is composed of two applications: a smartphone application that tracks the learner’s back posture and a PC game that steers a rocket and calculates a score based on the smartphone's information. In this paper, we present a user experience evaluation on the PCG. Our results show that PCG was positively perceived by participants and in most cases helped them to improve their posture while doing the Pilates exercise. Furthermore, it is also motivating them to continue with the training.
- KonferenzbeitragLearning Analytics Bundle(DeLFI 2018 - Die 16. E-Learning Fachtagung Informatik, 2018) Schiffner, Daniel; Ritter, Marcel; Horn, FlorianWe propose and create a new data model for learning specific environments and learning analytics applications. This is motivated from the experience in the Fiber Bundle Data Model used for large - time and space dependent - data. Our proposed data model integrates file or stream-based data structures from capturing devices more easily. Learning analytics algorithms are added directly to the data, and formulation of queries and analytics is done in Python. It is designed to improve collaboration in the field of learning analytics. We leverage a hierarchical data structure, where varying data is located near the leaves. Abstract data types are identified in four distinct pathways, which allow storing most diverse data sources. We compare different implementations regarding its memory footprint and performance. Our tests indicate that LeAn Bundles can be smaller than a naïve xAPI export. The benchmarks show that the performance is comparable to a MongoDB, while having the benefit of being portable and extensible.
- KonferenzbeitragOn the Lack of Recognition of Software Artifacts and IT Infrastructure in Educational Technology Research(20. Fachtagung Bildungstechnologien (DELFI), 2022) Kiesler, Natalie; Schiffner, DanielIn the context of educational technology research, it is common practice that computer scientists and IT specialists provide support in terms of software and infrastructure for data gathering and processing, storage, analysis and many other services. Ever since Big Data, Learning Analytics and machine learning algorithms have become increasingly feasible, the implementation of programs can be considered a cornerstone of today’s professional research. Contrary to this trend, software as a method for research is hardly recognized within the community, conferences and publication organs. The same applies to processed research data. Therefore, the authors question the current practices and lack of FAIRness related to the publication of software artifacts by discussing the challenges in terms of acknowledgements, review processes, reproducibility and reuse. The paper concludes with recommendations for future FAIR and Open Science practices.
- KonferenzbeitragPerception-influenced Animation(ARCS 2012 Workshops, 2012) Schiffner, Daniel; Krömker, DetlefThe heterogeneity of future living environments will increase the necessity to create applications that can run on any device. In the context of graphics applications, some kind of simplification must be included to enable rendering on devices with less computation power. Using perception to guide such a simplification is a common approach. However, existing methods generate levels of detail in advance, and only a selection is performed during run-time. In simulations, this not sufficient because an object will change over time. We present a framework that adapts a simulation using perceptual measures. We use a visual salience model to extract regions where detail can be modified. This information is calculated during run-time, and by using a dynamic data structure, the representation is adapted without a definition of levels of detail in advance. We included the system in a physics library and so created an interactive and continuous simulation level of detail.
- KonferenzbeitragUsability design and evaluation for a formative assessment feedback(DELFI 2020 – Die 18. Fachtagung Bildungstechnologien der Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V., 2020) Horn, Florian; Schiffner, Daniel; Sacher, Patrick; Gattinger, ThorstenIn a current research project we implemented an approach for delivering computer assisted adaptive testing as an additional form of formative assessment for a lecture. We primarily used these tests as a formative assessment during a “fundamentals of computer programming” course. The tests also included an individual feedback to further guide the students. To evaluate and improve the formative assessments, we performed a usability study, which was focused on the user satisfaction while taking a test and reading the feedback. The study used the user experience questionnaire. The results indicate that an adaptive assessment can provide more support, but also shows shortcomings of the current implementation.
