AbstractIT service providers are increasingly hosting different services of different customers on a shared IT infrastructure. While this fosters utilization of hardware infrastructure, system malfunctions, unexpected service behaviour or peak demands for one or more services may exploit resource pools (CPU, I/O, main memory, bandwidth etc.), entailing rejection of service requests. In this paper we describe models for dynamic admission control on shared infrastructures. The admission control model decides whether to accept, buffer or reject a service request based on the revenue, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and its resource demand in comparison to the actual workload to maximize overall revenue. Simulations of a media streaming infrastructure have been used for evaluation and comparison with traditional admission control policies.
- ZeitschriftenartikelData-Driven Decisions in Service Engineering and Management(Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures - An International Journal: Vol. 9, Nr. 1, 2014) Setzer, ThomasToday, the frontier for using data to make business decisions has shifted, and high-performing service companies are building their competitive strategies around data-driven insights that produce impressive business results. In principle, the ever-growing amount of available data would allow for deriving increasingly precise forecasts and optimised input for planning and decision models. However, the complexity resulting from considering large volumes of high-dimensional, fine-grained, and noisy data in mathematical models leads to the fact that dependencies and developments are not found, algorithms do not scale, and traditional statistics as well as data-mining techniques collapse because of the well-known curse of dimensionality. Hence, in order to make big data actionable, the intelligent reduction of vast amounts of data to problemrelevant features is necessary and advances are required at the intersection of economic theories, service management, dimensionality reduction, advanced analytics, robust prediction, and computational methods to solve managerial decisions and planning problems.
- KonferenzbeitragErtragsmanagementmodelle in serviceorientierten IT-Landschaften(Informatik 2005 – Informatik Live!
- ZeitschriftenartikelIndustrial Services as a Research Discipline(Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures - An International Journal: Vol. 11, Nr. 4, 2016) Gitzel, Ralf; Schmitz, Björn; Fromm, Hansjörg; Isaksson, Alf; Setzer, ThomasServices in the industrial sector—commonly referred to as industrial services—are an important source of profit, differentiation and future growth for their providers. This sector includes industries such as heavy equipment manufacturing, energy production, chemical production and oil and gas. Despite its importance, neither the term industrial service(s) nor its concrete subareas are unambiguously defined. The goal of this paper is to motivate research which addresses the challenges currently faced in the industrial sector with regard to service. For this purpose, we review existing definitions of industrial services and identify the services in scope as well as the scientific disciplines that can contribute. The main part of the paper is a list of relevant current and future challenges which have been encountered by the authors during their daily practice.
- ZeitschriftenartikelKombinatorische Auktionen in der betrieblichen Beschaffung(Wirtschaftsinformatik: Vol. 47, No. 2, 2005) Bichler, Martin; Pikovsky, Alexander; Setzer, ThomasCombinatorial auctions are promising auction formats for industrial and public procurement. Potential advantages of using combinatorial auctions include decreased overall spend, low transaction costs for multi-item negotiations, fairness and market transparency for suppliers, as well as high allocative efficiency. A number of fundamental design considerations are relevant to the application of combinatorial auctions in procurement. In addition, procurement specialists need to consider several domain-specific requirements, such as additional side constraints as well as alternative multidimensional bid types.
AbstractTraditional auction mechanisms support price negotiations on a single item. The Internet allows for the exchange of much more complex offers in real-time. This is one of the reasons for much research on multidimensional auction mechanisms allowing negotiations on multiple items, multiple units, or multiple attributes of an item, as they can be regularly found in procurement. Combinatorial auctions, for example, enable suppliers to submit bids on bundles of items. A number of laboratory experiments has shown high allocative efficiency in markets with economies of scope. For suppliers it is easier to express cost savings due to bundling (e. g., decreased transportation or production costs). This can lead to significant savings in total cost of the procurement manager. Procurement negotiations exhibit a number of particularities:It is often necessary to consider qualitative attributes or volume discounts in bundle bids. These complex bid types have not been sufficiently analyzed. The winner determination problem requires the consideration of a number of additional business constraints, such as limits on the spend on a particular supplier or the number of suppliers.Iterative combinatorial auctions have a number of advantages in practical applications, but they also lead to new problems in the determination of ask prices. In this paper, we will discuss fundamental problems in the design of combinatorial auctions and the particularities of procurement applications.Reprint of an article from WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK 47(2)2005:126–134.
- ZeitschriftenartikelNext-Purchase Prediction Using Projections of Discounted Purchasing Sequences(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 60, No. 2, 2018) Shapoval, Katerina; Setzer, ThomasA primary task of customer relationship management (CRM) is the transformation of customer data into business value related to customer binding and development, for instance, by offering additional products that meet customers’ needs. A customer’s purchasing history (or sequence) is a promising feature to better anticipate customer needs, such as the next purchase intention. To operationalize this feature, sequences need to be aggregated before applying supervised prediction. That is because numerous sequences might exist with little support (number of observations) per unique sequence, discouraging inferences from past observations at the individual sequence level. In this paper the authors propose mechanisms to aggregate sequences to generalized purchasing types. The mechanisms group sequences according to their similarity but allow for giving higher weights to more recent purchases. The observed conversion rate per purchasing type can then be used to predict a customer’s probability of a next purchase and target the customers most prone to purchasing a particular product. The bias–variance trade-off when applying the models to target customers with respect to the lift criterion are discussed. The mechanisms are tested on empirical data in the realm of cross-selling campaigns. Results show that the expected bias–variance behavior well predicts the lift achieved with the mechanisms. Results also show a superior performance of the proposed methods compared to commonly used segmentation-based approaches, different similarity measures, and popular class predictors. While the authors tested the approaches for CRM campaigns, their parameterization can be adjusted to operationalize sequential features of high cardinality also in other domains or business functions.
