- KonferenzbeitragDie berufsbegleitende Ausbildung „Usability Consultant“: Erfahrungen und Evaluation des ersten Ausbildungsgangs(Mensch & Computer 2007 Workshopband, 2007) Hüttner, Jens; Polkehn, Knut
- KonferenzbeitragThe Chinese and the German Blogosphere: An Empirical and Comparative Analysis(Mensch und Computer 2007: Interaktion im Plural, 2007) He, Yilin; Caroli, Folker; Mandl, ThomasChinese and German blogs do not only differ in the language of their text but also in many other aspects. This study explores how far these differences can be identified and related to known cultural differences between the two countries. A thorough intellectual analysis of 700 blog pages revealed culturally diverse patterns. Chinese blogs are more graphically oriented. They emphasize the communication between bloggers and commentators. Especially, the distinction between high and low context communication in both cultures seems to have a large impact on the blog communication.

- KonferenzbeitragWhat Can the Hundred Languages of Children Teach Us?(Mensch und Computer 2007: Interaktion im Plural, 2007) Kohlhase, Andrea; Schelhowe, Heidi; Lund, MichaelIn this paper we want to make use of the "Hundred Languages of Children" observed by Reggio pedagogue L. Malaguzzi, in order to understand the process of being engaged by and engaging with software. These languages allow children to appropriate objects on many levels. Here, we are interested what this means for usage of software and whether we can learn from them. We will take a close look at the reciprocal aspect of engagement, in particular with respect to software, and derive its relationship with imagination and conceptual metaphors. Concretely, we study the conceptual metaphors used by three children appropriating a software package that was definitely not designed for children, but for adults: MS PowerPoint (PPT). We contrast these use metaphors with the one that is expected for teachers in a PPT training unit. We can learn from these distinct attitudes, that not only the software (designers) are responsible for engagement, but the "language" of conceptual metaphors for software use as well.
- WorkshopbeitragRenegotiating Interaction Routines: Adoption of Skype in the Workplace(Mensch und Computer 2007: Interaktion im Plural, 2007) Joisten, MartinaSkype is a multimedia communication tool integrating Voice-over-IP (VoIP), Instant Messaging (IM) and video that can be used to support Real-Time-Collaboration (RTC) in the workplace. In this paper, we describe the adoption and use of Skype in dispersed teams in organizations. We show how Skype users evolve common conventions about using awareness information and modify their communication behaviour in mutual negotiation. We explain how this process of renegotiating routines for interaction during adoption is influenced by accustomed use patterns derived not only from pervasive telephony, but also IM. Our findings support Aoki & Woodruff’s (2005) postulation that ambiguity is crucial for (computer-mediated) interaction and show that hybrid media stimulate hybrid forms of communication.
- designStudent´s Usage of Multiple Linked Argument Representations in LARGO(Mensch und Computer 2007: Interaktion im Plural, 2007) Pinkwart, Niels; Lynch, Collin; Ashley, Kevin; Aleven, VincentThe intelligent tutoring system LARGO allows law students to annotate a transcript of an oral argument using diagrams which can be linked to text portions. LARGO analyzes diagrams and gives feedback to support students’ reflection. The feedback mechanisms rely on certain hypotheses about the interaction between the student and the system. In particular, a linear working mode (from beginning to end of the transcript) and a consistent and correct linking of diagram elements to the text are assumed. Based on an empirical study, this paper argues that the design of LARGO is functional and that the central interaction hypotheses are confirmed
