Despite mature knowledge, many approaches have been criticized to lack guidance on how to put process improvement into practice. Given the variety of emerging digital technologies, organizations not only face a process improvement black box, but also high uncertainty regarding digital technologies. This paper thus proposes a method that supports organizations in exploiting the digitalization potential of their business processes. To achieve this, action design research and situational method engineering were adopted. Two design cycles involving practitioners (i.e., managers and BPM experts) and end-users (i.e., process owners and participants) were conducted. In the first cycle, the method’s alpha version was evaluated by interviewing practitioners from five organizations. In the second cycle, the beta version was evaluated via real-world case studies. In this paper, detailed results of one case study, which was conducted at a semiconductor manufacturer, are included.
- ZeitschriftenartikelIdentifying Digital Transformation Paradoxes(Business & Information Systems Engineering: Vol. 64, No. 4, 2022) Danneels, Lieselot; Viaene, StijnIn turbulent contexts, organizations face contradictory challenges which give rise to management tensions and paradoxes. Digital transformation is one such context where the disruptive potential of digital technologies demands radical responses from existing organizations. While prior research has recognized the importance of coping with organizational paradoxes, little is known about how to identify them. Although it may be apparent in some settings which paradoxes are at play, other more ambivalent contexts require explicit identification. This study takes a design perspective to identify the relevant paradoxes in a digital transformation context. It presents the results of a 2-year action design research study in collaboration with an organization that chose to explicitly focus on paradoxical tensions for managing its digital transformation. The study’s main contribution is twofold: (1) it presents design knowledge to identify organizational paradoxes; (2) it provides a better understanding of the organizational paradoxes involved in digital transformation. The design knowledge will help others to identify paradoxes when working with an organization and highlights dynamic and collaborative aspects of the identification process. The study also enhances the descriptive understanding of digital transformation paradoxes by showing the importance of learning and belonging tensions and by expressing a different view on what knowledge about paradoxes is, and how it is created and used.

Durch die Beschreibung der unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften, Bedürfnisse, Ziele und Verhaltensweisen der verschiedenen Kundengruppen in Form von Personas können sich Designer, Software-Entwickler oder Marketing-Experten in den Nutzer hineinversetzen. Neben vielen Vorteilen, die zur Popularität des Persona-Ansatzes führen, existieren aber auch Herausforderungen. Insbesondere die üblicherweise qualitative Persona-Entwicklung in der Praxis kann zu Fehlinterpretationen oder mangelnder Akzeptanz führen. Dies hat zur Folge, dass entwickelte Personas in Unternehmen häufig nicht langfristig eingesetzt werden. In diesem Beitrag wird daher gezeigt, wie durch Verwendung von Design Science Research und Action Design Research eine kombinierte Forschungsmethodik den konsequenten Einbezug der Praxis im Zuge der Entwicklung von 360-Grad-Personas fördert. Personas are often used in the context of user-centered development of services. By describing the different properties, needs, goals and behaviours of different customer groups in the form of personas, designers, software developers or marketing experts can identify with and understand the user. In addition to many advantages that lead to the popularity of the persona approach, however, challenges also exist. In particular, the usually qualitative development of personas in practice bears the risk of misinterpretations or a lack of acceptance. As a result, the developed personas are often not used in a long-term context by organisations. Hence, by applying design science research and action design research, this paper shows how a combined research method improves the development process and the use of 360-degree personas in practice.
