- WorkshopbeitragThe AR-Marker in the Urban Space(Mensch und Computer 2019 - Workshopband, 2019) Nestler, Simon; Pranz, Sebastian; Neuburg, KlausWhen considering the role of Augmented Reality (AR) in the urban space, most previous work is focusing on touristic and everyday life use cases. However, the project “Archäologie der Gegenwart” which we present in this paper illustrates the different aspects of change in Hamm during the last 50 years. Thus, our AR approach opens up a deeper understanding of the urban cultural change processes by the means of AR. Our considerations lead to adding an AR layer as a fifth social dimension in the urban space. Technically, we robustly link this fifth layer with the existing topography by marker-based tracking with six degrees of freedom (6 DOF). When building AR applications for the urban space, the deeper understanding of the marker paradigm is crucial: During our workshops we identified and analyzed seven requirements for the utilization of markers in the public urban space. Additionally, we analyzed the general AR marker paradigm from the human-computer interaction (HCI) perspective by considering the affordances and signifiers of the marker objects themselves, analyzing the tracking technology and summarizing the marker’s role for past, present and future AR applications. Thus, the role of the AR marker is twofold: On the one hand the marker is part of the 6 DOF tracking technology, on the other hand it makes AR layers perceivable in the urban space. We expect that the importance of these markings for guiding citizens through AR experiences will emerge in urban spaces, whereas the role of markers for technical tracking purposes will decrease.
- KonferenzbeitragARchi VR: Real-time Collaboration in Augmented Spaces(Mensch und Computer 2023 - Tagungsband, 2023) Santiago, Moreno; Philipp, AckermannThis paper showcases the integration of real-time collaboration features for handheld AR devices used in indoor environments. The implemented collaboration functionality enables participants in a shared AR session to create and edit virtual objects by supporting remote, multi-modal visualization and interaction in 2D, 3D and AR. Additionally, we demonstrate our ongoing efforts in exploring video-based interaction with remote AR scenes. The implemented communication architecture and feature set was developed for Apple iOS devices based on the existing general-purpose room-scanning app ARchi VR. The prototype application demonstrates the feasibility and the potential of multi-modal collaboration in AR.
- KonferenzbeitragA Fusion of XR Technology and Physical Objects to Increase Citizens Participation in Urban Planning(21. Fachtagung Bildungstechnologien (DELFI), 2023) Sabah, Sam; Hossain, Imran; Weiss, David; Tillmann, AlexanderExtended Reality (XR), comprising Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) technologies have the potential to enhance urban planning with immersive and interactive experiences, but there learning cost hinders citizen participation. XR development requires technical knowledge, limiting individual engagement in urban planning. On the other hand, physical models offer tangible visualization for urban planning but lack features compared to software applications. Combining physical objects with XR technology poses challenges but holds the potential to promote citizen participation. This article introduces the concept of the city planner app, an application that integrates XR technology and physical objects in a mixed-reality setting. This app aims to leverage the strengths of both worlds and overcome their limitations to facilitate the involvement of citizens and students in urban planning.
- ZeitschriftenartikelThe Robinson House in the AR-Based Manassas Battlefield National Park Experience(i-com: Vol. 16, No. 3, 2017) Pettitt, Alisa; Fuhrmann, SvenThe historic Robinson House of Virginia’s Manassas Battlefield National Park survived the Civil War, but was destroyed in 1993 by an act of possible incendiarism. This research investigates how an augmented reality (AR) application for mobile devices could aid in virtually re-erecting history, such as the Robinson House, and thus provide educational, accessible, user-friendly apps for use at heritage sites. Initial results from this research show that AR-based experiences can be developed for heritage sites from customizable open source platforms accessible to historians and archaeologists. The prototype of the AR-based Manassas Battlefield National Park Experience highlights several opportunities for cross-disciplinary research between anthropology, geoinformation science and human-computer interaction.
- ZeitschriftenartikelTowards Networked and Structured VR ERA: Intuition Network of Excellence and Future Research Challenges(MMI Interaktiv - Human: Vol. 1, No. 12, 2007) Amditis, Angelos; Bimpas, Matthaios; Blach, RolandThe massive research and development process concerning Virtual Reality (VR) technology has reached a degree which makes a pan-European structuring and integrating effort an absolute necessity. Despite the fact that VR/AR technology has started being used to an extent in different industrial applications, this has been processed though in an unorganised way, lacking of long-term vision and dealing with case-by-case scenarios. Thus, a critical milestone is to facilitate the adoption of Virtual Environments (VEs) in industrial processes and assess the impact of its “penetration” into the workplace and everyday life. INTUITION works towards this direction, with the prime objective of promoting and facilitating the development and application of VR/VE technology in even more industrial domains, establishing thereby European excellence in this area. Moreover, INTUITION partners attempted to investigate the existing barriers for further penetration of VR into industrial applications and recognise the most important drivers that will lead to enhanced and wider use of VR/AR. An additional scope of this paper is to propose the main research areas and challenges in the field of VR/AR as idientified through INTUITION Working Groups throughout the last couple of years.
Augmented Reality technology is one of the key technologies of the digital transformation. Augmented Reality is the technology that enables overlaying of physical objects with computer-generated virtual perceptible data in real time to provide an interactive user experience in the real environment. Augmented Reality is currently used in many business fields such as engineering, education, medicine, logistics and transport either for experimentation or productive use. Due to the rapid development of display hardware and mobile devices in terms of performance as well as the range of functions, the implementation of powerful augmented reality applications for industrial applications has become easier. The presented paper will first give a brief overview of the current development and the importance of augmented reality technology for the industry as well as an introduction to the basics of eXtended reality and augmented reality technology. Then three use cases for the development and implementation of augmented reality applications in two different industrial areas—firefighting technology and refrigeration and air conditioning technology—will be presented. Finally, the gained project experiences during implementation and application of the use cases will be concluded.
