This development makes possible (and interesting) the execution of queries using up-to-date data from multiple, automatically discovered data sources. As a result, we currently witness the emergence of a new research area that focuses on an online execution of Linked Data queries; i.e. queries that range over data that is made available using the Linked Data publishing principles.This article provides a general overview on this new area. In particular, we introduce the specific challenges that need to be addressed and then focus on possible strategies for executing Linked Data queries. Furthermore, we classify approaches proposed in the literature w.r.t. these strategies.
- KonferenzbeitragContrasting Dedicated Model Transformation Languages vs. General Purpose Languages: A Historical Perspective on ATL vs. Java based on Complexity and Size - Extended Abstract(Software Engineering 2022, 2022) Höppner, Stefan; Kehrer, Timo; Tichy, MatthiasModel transformations are one key concept of model-driven engineering, and model transformation languages (MTLs) emerged with its popularity about 15 to 20 years ago. MTLs claim to ease model transformation development by abstracting from recurring transformation aspects and hiding complex semantics behind simple and intuitive syntax. Nonetheless, MTLs are rarely adopted in practice, there is still no empirical evidence for the claim of easier development, and the argument of abstraction deserves a fresh look in the light of modern general-purpose languages (GPLs) which have undergone a significant evolution in the last two decades. In our SoSyM paper, we report on a study in which we compare the complexity and size of model transformations written in three different languages, namely (i) the Atlas Transformation Language (ATL), (ii) Java SE5 (2004-2009), and (iii) Java SE14 (2020); the Java transformations are derived from an ATL specification using a translation schema we developed. Based on the results of these comparisons, we discuss the concrete advancements in newer Java versions. We also discuss to which extent new language advancements justify writing transformations in a GPL rather than a dedicated MTL. We further indicate potential avenues for future research on the comparison of MTLs and GPLs.

Der Beitrag zeigt anhand einer Literaturanalyse, dasssich das aktive Methodenspektrum der Wirtschaftsinformatik mit argumentativ-, konzeptionell- und formal-deduktiven Analysen, Prototyping, Fallstudien und quantitativen Querschnittanalysen aus sechs Kernmethoden zusammensetzt, die in 91% der Beiträge zum Einsatz kommendie WI in den letzten Jahren zunehmend auch quantitativ-empirische Methoden einsetzt, während gleichzeitig der Anteil argumentativ-deduktiver Arbeiten zurückgehtFallstudien, konzeptionelle und formal-deduktive Analysen von WI und IS etwa in gleichem Umfang eingesetzt werden, Prototyping und argumentativ-deduktive Arbeiten das methodologische Spezifikum der Wirtschaftsinformatik und quantitativ-empirische Querschnittstudien sowie Laborexperimente das methodologische Spezifikum des Information Systems Research sind.AbstractThe german-speaking IS community sees itself as a methodological pluralist discipline. With respect to recent debates (e.g. on rigor versus relevance) an exact knowledge of its methodological profile becomes increasingly important. This contribution presents the findings of a content analysis of 300 articles published in the journal WIRTSCHAFTSINFORMATIK in the last ten years. As one result, the study identified six major methods of the german-speaking IS community: argumentative, conceptional and formal deductive research, prototyping, case studies and quantitative cross sectional studies. It could also be shown, that the methodological profile continually changed during the last ten years. The article also compares its findings with the current methodological profile of the anglo-american IS community based on a secondary data analysis.
- KonferenzbeitragSurvey and Comparison of Open Source Time Series Databases(Datenbanksysteme für Business, Technologie und Web (BTW 2017) - Workshopband, 2017) Bader, Andreas; Kopp, Oliver; Falkenthal, MichaelTime series data, i.e., data consisting of a series of timestamps and corresponding values, is a special type of data occurring in settings such as “Smart Grids”. Extended analysis techniques called for a new type of databases: Time Series Databases (TSDBs), which are specialized for storing and querying time series data. In this work, we aim for a complete list of all available TSDBs and a feature list of popular open source TSDBs. The systematic search resulted in 83 TSDBs. The twelve most prominent found open source TSDBs are compared. Therefore, 27 criteria in six groups are defined: (i) Distribution/Clusterability, (ii) Functions, (iii) Tags, Continuous Calculation, and Long-term Storage, (iv) Granularity, (v) Interfaces and Extensibility, (vi) Support and License.
